I’ve got all the pre-crap set for me to work. They said in 4-6 weeks but now that the numbers are on the way up again, not so sure it will start. I need to call to see progress.
They said that they would contact me, both by e-mail and phone.
I worked as an enumerator in the 1980 Census. I and a partner started canvassing first (making sure addresses were real), and then we visited people who didn’t complete the Census and helped them fill it out. Lots of driving in the Mojave Desert, and I got paid for it. That, and four bucks an hour was pretty sweet for a teenager!
Update: I got a phone call this morning letting me know when training began, and asked me which date and time would work best for me. As of right now, it will be on the afternoon or evening of August 1st (yes, a Saturday) and within the next week, I should find out exactly when, and where.
I had my in-person training on Friday, July 17th. I’ve now moved on to online training (a great cure for my insomnia. Lawdy, but it’s dull.)
If you want to make more dough, volunteer to be a Runner. You’ll be taking paperwork and equipment from training centers to the central office for your area. You get mileage and hours paid and you get to see what goes on behind the scenes at the hub. My round trip is three hours (200 miles) so I’m sitting pretty for the next two checks.
My training is supposed to be on July 31. I’m still ambivalent about it but we’ll see how it goes. I don’t want to spend all my time convincing paranoid people that it’s in their best interest to fill out the census…
Those of you that have gotten scheduled and/or taken the in=person class-where are y’all from? I haven’t gotten scheduled for the in-person class yet that is supposed to take place on the 28th, but I live in Portland so perhaps the local/county/state guidelines are affecting this.
I’m in Cambria Co, Pennsylvania. My training was held in Somerset, the next county over from mine. Both counties have very few Covid cases, which may be why we’re already going live with classes.
Our work will be done in a 10 county wedge in the center of PA, from the New York border on down to the West VA line. Hope that helps!
San Francisco Bay Area here. I’m expecting a phone call in the next few days giving me more details.
Today, July 25, I finished my online training and will be suffering through a 2.5 hour conference call. Once that’s over, I’ll be assigned cases and start hitting the field.
Where is everyone else in the process?
Got a call a couple of days ago for a 2 hour training session Aug. 4. I’m supposed to get a followup email in a few days. Need to bring bank details for direct deposit and a couple of forms of ID.
Live in St. Louis County (Missouri), and will be getting my first orientation class on July 31. The money will be nice, and hopefully the work will be painless and plentiful. We shall see.
I signed up to be an enumerator in Houston - the training was…interesting, since we are still a Corona hotspot - we stayed in our cars for about 3 hours while trainers went from car to car in 95+ degree heat and 100% humidity with some stuff announced over the radio; I even took the oath in my car (which surprised me for some reason but I am now sworn not to go on strike and to defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic - I have some ideas on that!). I got my official iPhone (lord, I hate iPhones!) and am doing the stuff on line - but didn’t get a badge. I didn’t feel this was practiced at all. It will be interesting.
I called my dad this evening to wish him a happy birthday (he was 6/7 years old at the time of the 1940 census) and just a few minutes after hanging up, I got a call from the state office giving me the time and place for Saturday’s training. Not surprising to me, it’s going to be at a city-owned sports facility that also has large meeting rooms. They said, “Wear a mask, be there 15 minutes early, and expect it to take 2 hours.”
Bring your ID and SS card or you can’t fill out the paperwork. Sounds obvious, I know, but on Monday we had somebody not bring her SS card and she was sent home. (To get it but she never came back.)
Training will run about two hours if you’re lucky. You start getting paid as soon as you’re sworn in and you get paid mileage to drive home. Once you complete the online training and sit through a three-hour conference call (ugh) you’ll be out in the field!
Very pleased for you all! Good luck and stay healthy.
Nother, did you have to go to the office for the conference call, or could you do it at home?
An e-mail I received in the meantime said that the nature of that training will be determined by my job assignment.
I just got an email saying that the real email with the time and place of the appointment will be coming tomorrow. This pre-mail also had a list of possible training sites in my area, and one of them is only 3 blocks away.
At home. I sat on my bed with the A/C o n. There was some role playing involved so I had to pay attention.
