You never know what people, or their family members or housemates, might throw away.
The Secretary of Commerce has announced that the census counting will end on October 5. But apparently the court hearing with Judge Koh is still proceeding. She ruled that the count couldn’t end on Sept 30, and could continue till Oct 31, but a tweet, posted on the Census website set a new deadline.
The following excerpts are from an AP story.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross says the 2020 census will end Oct. 5, despite a federal judge’s ruling last week allowing the head count of every U.S. resident to continue through the end of October, according to a tweet posted by the Census Bureau on Monday(…)
The new Oct. 5 deadline doesn’t necessarily violate the judge’s order because the injunction just suspended the Sept. 30 deadline for field operations, as well as a Dec. 31 deadline the Census Bureau has for turning in figures (…)
Koh asked federal government attorneys during Monday’s hearing to provide documents on how the new decision to end the head count on Oct. 5 was made. When a federal government lawyer suggested that the decision-making was a moving target without any records, the judge asked, “A one sentence tweet? Are you saying that is enough reason to establish decision-making? A one sentence tweet?"
My favorite part of enumerating has been getting an interview when the chances seemed dismal. At the end of a shift and feeling burnt I tried to find one last easy, or exciting, case to finish my day. And there it was — the case notes said it “feels dangerous”, that the enumerator was “really uncomfortable”, and that it should probably be listed as a hazardous site.
WheN I drove

(continued from previous post… I hit the button accidentally, and could get the edits done in time)
I drove by, and it was on a busy street in an old but okay neighborhood. And there were a man and a woman out front, completely happy to talk to me. The house had been vacant for three years, the former occupant was the guy’s deceased father, who was a hoarder. They got a big kick when I told them about the case notes. The guy went inside and propped a Chuckie doll in the front window. He said that had been in place last week. He said sometimes they played weird music to deter vandals. We talked for 10 minutes and had a fine time.
More on the court order.
And just today:
And that’s all she wrote… er, counted.
I just wish they’d make up their %^&* minds.
In the meantime, over the past week or so, I got several phone calls from the state office reminding me that I needed to turn in my iPhone (which I did shortly after I resigned) and today, I got a package from FedEx informing me that if I don’t do that, I’ll be billed $1,500 (for an iPhone 4!) and/or charged with theft of government property. I had my supervisor’s number, and called him and he said that the central office has had a lot of mixups regarding this.
I mentioned it on the Facebook page, and several people asked me why I didn’t get a receipt for all the things I turned in. It never occurred to me that I needed to have one, and it’s possible, with the way things were going, that he may not have known this himself.
They made me sign when I got the equipment, and in return they signed when I gave it back to them.
I do remember signing forms when I received it, along with a lot of other paperwork that day. I’m sure I signed something when I turned it in, besides the time sheet I had to fill out (long story about that).
When I turned in my equipment there was an official check-off list of all the equipment, that both sides signed, and I was given a copy.
My local area is hiring again, for a different project. I sent for an application packet, which I would need because they aren’t doing online applications this time. We’ll see what happens this time.
Good luck!

I love this from Justice Breyer’s dissent: "Where, as here, the government acknowledges that it is working to achieve an allegedly illegal goal, this court should not decline to resolve the case simply because the government speculates that it might not fully succeed.”

Has anyone gotten their tax forms yet?
I haven’t, but it isn’t the end of January yet.
