I got Photoshop 7. What kind of fun can a knownothing have before lessons are needed?

Learn to love layers. Want to try aribrushing over something but not sure it it’ll look better than the original? Create a new layer to do your airbrushing in and turn it on/off to see which you prefer. The airbrushing looks nice but maybe a little too heavy? Set the transparency to 50%. The color on your airbrushing is off? Adjust it with hue/saturation. Want to see what happens if you airbrush the background too? Duplicate the layer and turn off the bottom one, add your additional airbrushing and flip between them to see what you like better. Note: you will have to save the file as a .psd file to keep the layers if you close it and open it later.

Does 7.0 come with ImageReady? (6.0 does.) It’s a separate program and it’s freakin’ amazing. You can do all kinds of totally cool effects. I have a friend who took a picture of me and used ImageReady to turn my portrait face into an elf - big eyes, pointy ears, long fingers. Yet it still is me. People look at it and can’t quite figure out what has been done; they just know I look like an elf. You can also change your body or proportions to something more pleasing, or to what you wish you looked like. I imagine it’s how magazines make models’ bodies look so perfect. (Not saying that anyone should aspire to an unrealistic body: it’s fun to make yourself look like a funhouse mirror shape, too!)

In some ways, I think ImageReady is more fun than Photoshop itself.

Well, if you work in the software industry, i’m surprised that you apparently don’t realise that even pirated software generally comes with a manual. Sure, it’s an online manual rather than a paper copy, but it’s an instruction guide nonetheless.

Also, not all legal software comes with a proper book. I have a (fully legal and paid up) version of MS Word on my computer that came with no paper instruction manual because it was part of an OEM package. Even my non-OEM, fully legal version of MS Access did not have a proper manual in the box; it had a quick guide, with the rest of the documentation being online. None of the software bundled with my Dell computer, including WordPerfect, had a hard copy of the manual.

In defense of Squeegee, I thought the exact same thing when you wrote “thought it would be cool for me to have Photoshop, so she put it on the computer.” My first thought was “oh-oh, the mods are gonna come close this thread. Copying software is a big no-no.” Now, I didn’t think that your daughter or you were criminals or bad people, but I did think that maybe you didn’t realize that it wasn’t an OK thing to do.

Biggirl, you gotta realize that for those of us working in the software industry, pirating software is a big deal, especially now that so many jobs are being sent overseas. We’re a little jumpy when it comes to piracy, much like an author may be jumpy around plagarism. I’m happy to hear that it is, indeed, a valid version of Photoshop, and hope you get some good pointers here. But I didn’t think Squeegee was that out of line, and I hope that the people around here continue to do our bit to fight against software piracy.

The reason squeegee was out of line is that there was no need to jump to conclusions at all. The OP didn’t ask a question about pirating software, or anything even related. The OP asked specifically about some websites that would help her to use Photoshop. Having Photoshop myself, i know that most of my knowledge about how to use it for digital pictures comes from a whole bunch of excellent website tutorials, and not from the offical documentation.

I realise that for some of you software geniuses out there, it might be a bit hard to fathom, but some of us need some help working out all this wonderful software, and often the official manual that comes with it is not the most helpful tool for a beginner. And, on the issue of piracy, i believe we owe other Dopers the benefit of the doubt in the first instance, and that unless someone says “Help me with my pirated software,” we shouldn’t go jumping to half-assed conclusions about what they may or may not have done.

Finally, if you think that sending software engineering jobs overseas is largely the result of software piracy, i suggest that you’re missing the forest for the trees.

And for the OP, here are some of the tutorials that helped me understand how to make my digital pictures better using PS:

And, for an excellent and easy-to-follow tutorial on how to remove red eye:

Exactly. What, now we have to examine every post - “I thought Photoshop would be fun so I went out and bought a copy and here’s my license number and I have registered it on my legally owned computer, serial number xx-xxxx, and now what fun things can I do with it?”

LOTS of software doesn’t come with a manual these days. I haven’t seen a manual included with ANY of my new, legal software in more than 5 years. Why spend money to print a manual that nobody reads anyway - instead, the manufacturers provide one on line.

Yes, layers are good. Of course, I’m a dummy, who forgets to use layers half the time.

Other good things you can do with layers. Recolouring can sometimes go better with a new layer/colour overlay, rather than just using a brush/pencil to recolour.

I mostly use it for editting Candybar dolls, or playing with comic book images, for wallpaper or livejournal userpics, rather than playing with photos, so I’m not sure just how useful any tips I might have would be for that.

I sooooooooooo love Photoshop! Although I no longer have access to it, and have to settle for the GIMPed GIMP. :frowning:

For photo touch-ups, your best friends are

Dust & scratches
Blur
Curves/Levels/Auto-level
Brightness/Contrast

You can also apply filters to selected parts of the photo by using the select tools. I would suggest playing around with them to see what they do, so that you’ll get familiar with them and know just how much to use.
That, and photoshop has actual CYMK, and GIMP does not. :frowning:
