She didn’t just look like someone who held nutty/bigoted opinions, she really seemed like to some degree she’d lost control of her mental faculties. Her mannerisms, the glaze in her eye, the way she spoke…there really seemed to be something wrong. I almost felt bad for her. Sad.

I’m more in agreement with those that say Glee simply panders to gay stereotypes:

> **[The gay one from Glee – positive role model or dangerous cliché?](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2011/mar/15/kurt-hummel-glee-gay)**

> Kurt Hummel is a popular gay character that broke through the Fox filter. But does his brand of Fox-approved homosexuality serve to reinforce stereotypes?

Then again, I stopped watching after a few episodes this season when it became clear that all the producers cared about were sales of the songs on iTunes.

Much of her shtick on SNL was playing that of a ditz, a total airhead blonde. These outrageous comments make me wonder if this is some sort of poor taste parody, a lame attempt to extend that persona.

Kurt is basically a gay Stepin Fetchit. This is a very light show that’s primarily aimed at teenagers and young adults and airs at a time of night usually reserved for sitcoms. It’s fluffy, a TV pantomime with rock. The character’s are broad and almost burlesque at times. I would never defend it as art and I seriously doubt that Sue’s track suit will be on a mannequin in the Smithsonian when the show wraps (though the show’s at least as good as and more groundbreaking than _Happy Days_ and Fonzie’s jacket’s there, so who knows?).

But it’s hard for straight people to imagine (this isn’t aimed at amanset, who I’ve no idea whether he or she is gay or straight) the complete invisibility of positive gay teenagers on TV before the late 1990s. I actually like the fact that Kurt’s far from perfect as well- he’s bitchy, self centered, has major boundary issues- while I won’t call the character all that believable (but then who wants to see a mundane character on TV?) it makes him slightly more believable and not just a total blemish free victim.

And even if you’re not a fan of GLEE you can appreciate that the kiss was a big deal TV wise. Can you even imagine a gay teens kissing on an episode of _Happy Days_ or _The Cosby Show_ or much of anything before this century? GLEE is not shoving it down anyone’s throat, it’s just showing gays as part of the big picture. And again, there’s no frigging way anybody could watch more than one episode of GLEE and not know it’s a gay friendly show that’s likely to one day have this- gays aren’t asexual after all, even if they’re celibate their sexuality is a defining aspect of them.

I’m thrilled that so many straight fans of the show were happy with this episode. I’m thrilled with the YouTube clips where Chris Colfer goes onstage at a GLEE concert at the audience goes wild- nobody yells “Faggot!” or “Queer!” or whatever. It’s truly- hate to use the term- but heartwarming how far we’ve come.

So if his getting kissed by his boyfriend, which is 100% something gay teenagers sometimes do and that it doesn’t make them evil or twisted or deserve to get their asses whipped by the Moral Majority for it is “shoving it down” Victoria Jackson’s throat, well, then either open wider bitch and make room for it among the semi-digested Twinkies and Hot Pockets you’ve forced down there and the next “total coincidence if it’s not so stupid Trigg Palin would blush if caught saying it” words that’s coming up that throat. Or, change the fucking channel- not even in prisons is anybody forced to watch GLEE. Or turn the TV off. The fact this kiss is such a newsworthy event would show anybody with 19 functioning neurons that it’s the exception rather than the rule.

I remember her schtick on SNL, and I thought the dizty, airhead thing was just a put-on. It turns out she actually is a mental child. She’s a true zealot, paranoid, isolated from reality and shockingly uninformed. I think she’s actually deteriorated. I remember seeing her on Bill Maher’s _Politically Incorrect_ back in the day, and while she was a fundamentalist simpleton, she didn’t seem as mean or as afraid as she does now. She said stupid things, but she tried to be affable. She bashed the gays and quoted Leviticus, but then she did the old “I have friends who are gay/ I don’t hate the sinner, I hate the sin” thing which, for some reason, homophobes always thinks absolves them from being homophobes. I wonder if any of those gay “friends” even knew she was calling them friends.

Gay stuff aside, the bits in Jackson’s columns where she talks about how she’s being spied on by liberal government agents cracked me right up.

I can’t deny that the Kurt character is in many ways a broad gay stereotype, but most of the characters on _Glee_ are in many ways broad stereotypes: the dumb slutty blonde cheerleader, the big sassy black girl, etc. While I can see how this sort of thing could be off-putting to many viewers, the show does treat gay characters (and Kurt isn’t the only one anymore) pretty much the same way it treats straight characters.

I’m as straight as an arrow and the difference is VERY obvious to me. If you asked me to name five gay characterson TV in 1991 I’d struggle to do so, and none were teens. As precently as the 1980s gays were comic relief only (with very few exceptions.)

Donnie Osmond went with this old saw on a recent interview show. “I have friends who are gay, I just think that they are committing abominations and will burn in a lake of fire for eternity” just doesn’t quite wash. If you think what they are doing is wicked and evil then why are you friends with them? Nobody says “I have friends who are adulterers/embezzlers/con-artists/child pornographers/killers-for-hire/wife-beaters/muggers/pimps/etc.”, which would imply even they think it’s a more venial offense.

I wonder how Osmond would react if I said “I think you’re a truly wonderful guy, but your religion is so full of shit I’m surprised it’s not covered in corn and for the life of me I can’t understand how anybody who believes in it could outsmart a cantaloupe”. It’s actually less damning a statement than the “love the people/hate the sin” thing since I don’t believe there’s any otherworldly condemnation of following a silly religion, I just think it shows there’s something seriously lacking in your logical faculties and that you’re a Kool-Aid chugging asshole in this life if you use it to try to affect my life through legislation.

And of course, like John Hagee-Glenn Beck-Rush Limbaugh-Bob Barr-Anita Bryant-John McCain and many of the rest of those who’ve spoken out against gay marriage and gay relationships, Victoria Jackson divorced her first husband and remarried while he was still alive. BUT, that’s okay because when Jesus said that whoever does this is committing adultery he didn’t mean _her_.

Even back then, I felt that she wasn’t playing a persona, but that she was actually that ditzy and stupid. Turns out either I was right, or it’s become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Jackson did the ditzy shtick, but she also started out doing comedy while standing o n her head and suchlike – she did that on the _Tonight Show_ BEFORE she did SNL. She was also incredibly cute and sexy (between Tonight and SNL her picture appeared in _Playboy_ – fully clothed, I note – as an up-and-coming comedian. I thought she was great on SNL, especially the time she appeared on Weekend Update as a thoughtful, serious, commentator, about as far from the ditzy chick as you could get. (I think that’s what suggested to lots of us that she wasn’t an airhead, that it was All An Act.)
Nowadays he’s put on weight (a killer in the viscious world of show biz) and probably couldn’t recite Shakespeare while standing on her hands in high heels anymore. But she’s still got ditzy – which might still be an act. At least she’s working.
