I’m currently laid up in bed ill, and I’m relying on my iPad for entertainment, and I’ve realised something about Apple’s revolutionary wonder product: It’s buggy as fuck and doesn’t work. Here’s a brief rundown of the first world problems I’ve been experiencing:

1). It took me about a week to figure out how to get to my iTunes library to play podcasts. Now, you’d _think_, the library being the repository of _all_ your podcasts, and Apple’s podcast range being one of it’s main USP’s, that the library would be easy to find. For instance, if I had designed the iPad, I would have put a link to the library on _evey single page of iTunes_, because, well, fuck it, why _not_, right? It doesn’t fucking cost anything. Let’s go the extra mile and make life a little easier for everyone.

Instead, to play my podcasts, I have to go to iTunes-\>Downloaded Items-\>Purchased-\>More-\>Podcasts. Now, to me, that’s not intuitive at all. It took me _fucking ages_ to find that out!

2). The video interface is buggy as a motherfucker. I’ve been using iTunes to download old episodes of The X-Files, and about half the episodes I’ve downloaded simply do not appear in the video interface. I know they’re _there_. I know I’ve downloaded the episodes properly. I know they’re sitting on the hard drive taking up space. I can see them when I go to Settings-\>General-\>Usage-\>Video-\>The X Files. But I can’t fucking play them, because the stupid, lousy, cunting, Christing, pig-fucking video interface just isn’t picking them up! instead, what it’s doing is duplicting the episodes it _does_ pick up for no reason at all. For example, I’ve downloaded episodes from seasons 1 & 2 of The X-Files. The season 2 episodes are nowhere to be found, but the season 1 episodes appear in the interface _twice_, as if to mock me!

3). The internet is slow as fuck and keeps crashing. Initally, I thought this was a poblem with my Wifi. Then I checked that theory using my mum’s laptop, which works _perfectly_, and realised that, nope, it’s gotta be the fucking iPad. Now occasionally, the internet service isn’t too bad. Things hum along at a nice, even clip, and I can get shit done in a timely fashion. At those times, I can reflect on all the good things about the iPad, like the voluminous iTunes product range, and Temple Run, and Words With Friends. At times like these, all is right with the world, and thoughts of murder couldn’t be further from my mind. The rest of the time, however, it’s an unendurable frustration. Apart from taking an age to download even simple websites, the iPad has an endearing habit of automatically refreshing tabs if you don’t look at them for a few minutes. That means, if you had to wait ten minutes for a page to load the first time, you’re going to have to wait ten minutes again.

Now, I don’t expect to fare too well in this pitting. There are a great many technoloical wunderkinds on this site to whom the addled ramblings of a neophyte like me must seem like just so many lunatic diatribes about the end times, penned in excrement on alley walls and toilet stalls. Furthermore, I fully accept that I may be overlooking the absolute bleeding obvious. However, to those people, I say, respectfully, suck my balls! I’m miserable, I’m stuck in bed, and the only person I can consult for technical help is my mum, and she doesn’t know the difference between a google search and a poptart!

Fucking iPad, at this rate I might be forced to go do something constructive with my time.

_skulks off, grumbling_

- Posted from an Apple iPad, because I hate it that fucking much.

Here’s anither thing I hate about the iPad: Sometimes, the download speed is so fucking slow it makes me yearn for the days of 28kbs dial-up modems. I’m trying to download an episode of The X-Files right now. The file size is 457mb. How long should that take to download on a Wi-Fi connection? 20 minutes? Half an hour? Something like that. Right?

It certainly shouldn’t take _three fucking weeks_, should it? Mright now, the download status bar reads, and has read for the past hour 30,491.62 minutes remaining. There are 1440 minutes in a day. That works out to 21 days and about 2 hours to download one poxy video file. Mand, if course, because Apple, in their infinite fucking wisdom, programmed the iPad in such a way that it can only download one file at a time, all the rest of the videos that I bought are stuck behind this fucking logjam, potentially forever. Fuckin’ bullshit is what it is.

You don’t go to iTunes to play stuff. You go to “Music”. Music - More - Podcasts.

A week, huh?

I’ve never had that problem. Are you using iTunes to watch them, like you were with the podcasts? Go to Videos, not iTunes.

The connection speed will vary depending what’s between you and the router, and what else your wifi is being used for, but the hardware should download it at normal speed. I find when I’m in the bedroom (other end of the house, different floor) my connection speed suffers. If I’m nearer the router, it’s fine.

Long shot, but do you happen to know if you’ve got [UPnP](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play) enabled on your router? Reason for asking: Some devices don’t care and function well without it, other devices may connect, but suffer suboptimal perfomance.

That’s what I’m doing. I had a long chat with an Apple customer service rep tis morning and he couldn’t figure it out either. He advised me to download the videos again. I’m doing the same thing I do to watch the videos I _have_ downloaded successfully. It’s just that, for some reason, the iPod video interface is only picking up about half the stuff I’ve bought.

I’m afraid my router is in the room with me and the connection is still very slow. I’m wondering if it’s a problem with my ISP.

After having used friends’ iPads for various things I considered getting them, but I’m now becoming very anti-Apple.

It started when I asked my friend, “Why do you need some kind of “app” to view YouTube videos? Why can’t you just view them in a browser like always?” I was told that Apple doesn’t use Flash and therefore it wouldn’t work that way. Um, OK. Upon further research I’ve found I really dislike the whole “walled garden” approach that Apple uses.

I really don’t see why the thing can’t act like an external hard drive - just plug it in and move files back and forth. That would be simple. I also don’t understand why a Windows version of tablet using the good features of an iPad apparently isn’t viable.

Download and install the Netflix app. My wife loves it and has watched probably hundreds of movies over the years on her iPad.

Most of the time, if there is a YouTube video on a website, when you tap on the video, Safari launches the YouTube app.

That said, sometimes folks used a video codec that isn’t supported by the iPad/iPhone and you get a disappointing error message.

The iPad fits a particular kind of use, but it does fail in many other uses. My wife loves hers—she is a general techophobe and I was surprised at how easily she glommed onto it. Then I realized that she has always wanted a computer that she could just turn on and quickly send an email or look something up or watch a video—an appliance like a TV. That’s exactly what the iPad is.

I like it as well, but it sucks as a power user tool. Printing sucks. File management sucks. Terminal software is lame. Multitasking is awkward at best.

Holy fuck, man. You’ve posted like 5 “please help me with my iPad” threads in the last couple weeks, and every single fucking one of them people tell you to just download the videos again. And now all of a sudden it’s a goddamn revelation when an Apple rep tells you the same thing?

I’m starting to understand why you’re having so much difficulty, and I don’t think it has fuck-all to do with your ipad.

Maybe someone can help me with my iPad problem, Straight Dope Message Board related.
I open the mail function on my iPad to see what threads I have subscribed to have new posts. From the e-mail I can jump to the SDMB thread via the link.
However, once I’m done viewing that thread I can not close up the SDMB window and be returned back to the e-mail page where I can delete that message and go onto the next one.
Instead, closing the SDMB window closes everything back to the iPad desktop and I have to go back and reopen the e-mail app again. P-I-T-A.

And the double-click then touch e-mail app again to re-open again is not a time saver.

Such devices exist - just not made by Apple. The 'walled gardens approach is at least as much a feature as it is a limitation.

Are you using iOS 5.0 or later? Do you have multitouch turned on? When you’re in Safari, put all your fingertips on the screen and swipe from left to right. Presto, you’re back in the previous app, which in this case was Mail.

Actually, it was 3 threads, and only 2 recommended redownloading the vids. And in fairness, the other threads, while undeniably concerning similar topics, weren’t about this specific problem. And if you’ve got a problem with me starting too many iPad related threads…well, it’s your fault for being so damn helpful 🙂
