I think clichéd speech - and more importantly, trite ideas, tastes and opinions - are the most effective social lubricant we have. A lot of us (and I mean participants in a more or less sophisticated community such as SDMB) will call someone “boring” if they only like what a lot of other people like. If this applies to you, however, you are probably in a minority. Most people will find the conventional person both fun and safe. The one who only likes what they, themselves, like is more “boring” to society at large. For that reason, I think, the intelligent person who doesn’t want life to be a constant battle with loneliness would be wise to cultivate as much of a conventional side as they can tolerate, and learn to express it to others without evident irony or reservation. “Be yourself” is good advice only for the average joe or jane. Most Dopers diverge from the average. ---
