I put these posts in the wrong thread. Got my depressing tragedies mixed up.

I agree, this has got to be the most heart rending link I’ve ever followed from the Dope.

I can’t believe that someone would do that. One question though, as I couldn’t read it all, did it say how they knew the child was telling her mum that she loved her as they beat her to death? Were there any witnesses outside the family?

The mother and step-father are being tried seperately. I assume they’ve been interviewed and have been giving evidence against each other.

I find these types of defenses fucking retarded. They didn’t \*mean \*to kill her when they were beating her with belts, shoving her face into a pillow, holding her head underwater and throwing her across the room; it just … \*ooops \*… happened.

Burning your toast just happens. When you do the above mention things, death is the result even if it wasn’t the aim.

It’s like saying, I didn’t mean to burn down my house when I decided to cleaned the couch with kerosene and a blow torch … it just happened.
I do not understand how it could even be considered as a mitigating circumstance. I suppose the defense lawyer is probably working off the – they’re fucked, and this is all I got – strategy, but still. It’s maddening to listen to someone try to excuse something like this.

“Spare the rod and spoil the child” is a deep-seated and, what’s worse, insidious belief. There must be a feeling, deep down in places they don’t talk about, that it is a parent’s right - maybe even responsibility - to visit physical violence on their offspring.

Two people think that beating a child to death for failing to meet their unrealistic expectations “just happens,” and prosecutors don’t think that they pose a future danger? Have Trenor and Zeigler been spayed/neutered/had their genitals torn off, thus ensuring that they can’t make any more kids to abuse?

I can hardly imagine a worse idea than restoring “public executions” in any sense.

Feeding lust for violence is never a good plan. This recreational outrage at that horrible story should reveal that clearly enough. When that same RO drives a desire for further horrific violence, that desire needs to be suppressed for the greater good of a non-violent, stable society.

> what in God’s name kept mom Trenor from protecting Riley?

Untreated post-partum depression would be my guess. If she had moved from her family and friends and usual support network, I can see those around her not knowing her well enough(or caring enough about her) to see the symptoms and take steps to help. It’s sad how common post-partum depression is and it’s one of the things I think the US culture’s concept of independence and the nuclear family has a large amount of responsibility for. I was discussing it with a friend from Kenya one day and she mentioned how a girl she had gone to school with(and since lost contact with) had committed infanticide after suffering from post-partum depression. She said back home in Kenya your mother, your mother in law, a sister, someone, or several someones, typically move in with the new mother for at least three months and take care of a lot of stuff around the house. The new mother’s job is to nurse the baby and get her strength back, and that’s pretty much it. She believed this lack of a support network had been a major factor in her friends actions. She said her friend was a bright, capable woman, but something seemed to change in her after the baby was born and she became broken and cried all the time.

It’s the norm in most parts of the developing world to build a support group around new mothers. My friend from India had his mother in law and father in law staying with them for three months around the time his daughter was born, and then after the visitor visa has expired for his MiL and FiL the whole family is going to India for another month or two. Mom won’t have to fend for herself when her husband goes back to work after a week off. The US has a Family Medical Leave Act(FMLA) which provides paternity leave as well as maternity leave, but it’s unpaid and the number of people who take it is vanishingly small. I know of only one. I was fortunate to be able to take a couple weeks off after the births of my last two children and the corporate culture I worked in wasn’t pleased with even that amount of time away. I know working mothers who feel the same way. Working families can’t afford unpaid medical leave even if the alternatives are things like post-partum depression.

It just seems like so many of these ultra-fucked-up pairs that you read about meet each other online, specifically in online games.

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with meeting someone online, and in fact, I met my first wife on IRC in the '90s, but I guess it also gives psycho wastes of life a larger potential pool of other wastes to mate with.

This was a thought I had, too! “Pose a future danger”? Maybe not to individuals who are big enough defend themselves!

I swear to you, reading this article almost made me physically ill.

My husband and I are not hell-bent opposed to corporal punishment, when all else fails\*. But this goes so very, very far beyond that, it’s literally sickening.

\*FWIW, I’ve “spanked” 9YO **mudgirl** exactly once. When she was 4, I gave her a ‘time out’ on the sofa, and she refused to go into time-out. She _ran away_ from me, up the stairs, down the hall. I don’t know where she thought she was going when she got to the end of the hall! I cornered her there, scooped her up, swatted her butt three times (through her dress, tights and panties) and carried her back down to the sofa for her time-out. She was screaming like she’d been murdered, even though they weren’t very hard swats! Even now, she can tell you about the time Mommy “spanked” her.

Somebody capable of this sort of violent temper outburst is most certainly a “future danger” to anyone who crosses their path, unless they’ve been paralyzed from the neck down.

Which doesn’t strike me as a bad idea, actually…
