I did not know the shoe song. Holy cow, this is why I don’t listen to any carols written after 1900 (unless they’re sung by Sarah)! It’s time for the barfy smilie. ---

My fave song is Happy Xmas but I guess it could be sad if you really miss John. I hate the Charlie Brown one where they are ice skating, Christmas Time Is Here. Gah! ---

Depending upon one’s emotional circumstances, I suppose **any** Christmas song could make you sad. I’ve had an unreasonable hatred of \*Silent Night \*ever since I was exposed to Jay North’s overly bright-eyed rendition on the old Dennis The Menance TV show. ---

I’ve come to realize that the shoe song is actually a celebration of materialism (acquiring goods is way more important than spending time with loved ones) and a slight commentary on modern Christianity (Jesus cares what you look like? Really?). That doesn’t mean I’ve gained any tolerance for it though. It’s not a sad song, but I have developed an incredible amount of hatred for the hippopotamus song. ---

They even made a movie based on The Christmas Shoes, starring Rob Lowe. Not only does the boy get the shoes, but Rob learns to get out of the rat race and treasure his family first. ::gag ---

missed the edit window I was laughing so hard. Let me get this straight. Mom is sick so the little boy wants to buy her shoes so she can look good if she meets Jesus tonight. Yes because so much of the gospel Jesus is bitching about women who don’t have stylish shoes. But the biggie is how the narrator comes up with the idea that God sent the little boy to help the narrator realize what Christmas is all about. Ok ok ok, God is creating the universe and he looks through time and realizes that the narrator, let’s call him Dick, is not going to feel so Christmasy one year so God sets up a family of mom dad and little boy and then a year or so before Dick loses the Christmas spirit God gives the mom cancer, and the little boy a horrible sense of what sick women want has a gift, so that Dick can get in the Christmas mood?!?!?! Mom has to die so Dick can feel good about himself and Jesus! A guy is losing his wife, a boy is losing his mother and Dick thinks God personally set this up so that Dick would worship God better. This God and his followers are more sick and twisted than anything H P Lovecraft ever came up with. ---

I LOVE Christmas songs. But only after Thanksgiving (preferable, only once Advent has officially started). I HATE HATE HATE the Shoe Song. EEEuuuuggh. What _crap_. Nothing makes me change the station (or leave the store) faster. ---

I actually do enjoy some - a few - Christmas songs. I like to listen to Brian Setzer Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Harry Connick Jr. ‘swingin’ Christmas’ type stuff, if only to weep and dream of the kind of Christmas/Christmas parties that once were, sort of, but will never be again, as long as I live. Sort of painful nostalgia, thinking back to better times. … Then there’s the fact Christmas music drags on FAR too long and instead of happy/wistful/sad, it just becomes maddening!!! ---

Silent night, holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth! That’s some beautiful stuff. In our church they turn down the lights and we sing it in the hush of midnight and candlelight. Beautiful. ---
