Ex-custom-framer here. I have particularly strong feelings about Kinkade because, unlike the rest of you who are FREE TO LEAVE THE HOMES of people who purchase his tripe, it was part of my job description to look at Kinkades all day long. _gasping sob_ I HATE HIM! _screams, sobs, runs from the room at the memory_ _returns for a moment_ BTW, _JinWicked_\* has a very amusing painting that deals with her hatred of Kinkade. I’m pretty sure that someoone could write a filter for photoshop that could randomly create spot-perfect Kinkades. . . “Painter of Light”?? I’d never heard that. How unfortunate for my tech support guys - they won’t appreciate having to clean vomit out of this keyboard. Kinkade is nothing short of violently offensive to anyone with any artistic sense at all. ---

Shrug. I’m not a big fan of the cottages or nature scenes, but I do like the ones with lots of interesting cars and people and shops and stuff (e.g. Carmel). We have two canvas Kinkade prints mixed in with about a dozen original works from various unknown artists. All of them are better than the endless boring landscapes that seem to dominate art galleries in these parts. ---

Thank you, SDMB! I _knew_ I couldn’t be the only one who was disgusted by Mr. Kinkade’s smarmy, incompetent, indifferently executed cuddlefests. Houses built on watersides which could in no way support a foundation. Rooftop snowdrifts that look disturbingly like goosedown. Confusing and mysterious relationships between light and shadow… It all suggests some evil earth, perched menacingly in an alternate universe, and insidiously creeping into our own dimension, through the cosmic rift that is Thomas Kinkade. And tasteless goons willingly pollute the world with this garbage. I received a Thomas Kinkade Christmas card, this year. It made me frown. ---

Yay, **fessie** , for coming up with a thread title that perfectly expresses my thoughts. There’s a long history of middlebrow figurative “art” purveyed to the masses in this country, starting with Currier and Ives, and continuing through Maxfield Parrish and Norman Rockwell. The odious Mr. Kinkade is merely profiting from this long-standing tradition (and hey, let’s not forget to bash LeRoy Neiman, as long as we’ve got the hammer out). Gotta admit, though, I utterly fail to see the appeal to anyone of Kinkade’s work. Everything I’ve seen of it seems like something you’d find at the annual exhibition of a small-town Art League. Oh, maybe that explains it. A Seinfeldian moment: I met a young lady a few weeks ago. We seemed to hit it off, had drinks a couple of times, talked about going out to dinner. One night we were discussing art; she mentioned that she “kind of liked Thomas Kinkade”. I haven’t been able to bring myself to call her since. ---

My mother-in-law has a Kinkade wallpaper border in her den. We mock her. I laugh my ass off every time I see an ad in the paper for a craft store that lists all the things on sale that week. Every time framed art goes on sale, there is a disclaimer: \*does not include Kinkade framed art. It never goes on sale! Yet people snatch it up! I think a lot of people like Kinkade because it’s not something you have to think about. It’s not even something you can think about. It’s just a pretty picture. Not my taste, but neither is a lot of stuff people put in their houses. ---

I enjoy his work. \*\* Think in terms of Dante’s Inferno - I’d rate Rockwell up in the “Limbo” range 'cause I sometimes like him (hey, that painting of the little girl going to school escorted by police is pretty sharp). Parrish might be “Gluttonous” (all those rich colors). They’re more on the “Incontenent” scale. On the other hand Kinkade is definitely guilty of “Traitors to Kin” and that’s way down in Level 9, which is “Treacherous Fraud”. Only about 5 steps above Lucifer himself. ---

I forgot about him. But he doesn’t have as big a mouth as Kinkade & isn’t as omnipresent. I’d put him in with the “Fraudulent Counselors” since he got so many commissions from wealthy stupid people. That’s about Level 8, in the category of “Ordinary Fraud”. ---
