In the spring we get lots of [these](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9a/Mole_cricket02.jpg/800px-Mole_cricket02.jpg) in our lawn. They’re called mole crickets around here and make anthill looking mounds of dirt with their little claws. Similar to potato bugs, it appears, except with _claws_. ---

Haven’t seen it today. Did find a spider hanging in my room. I tried to take him out in the hallway but he jumped away. Ah well. Got no problem with spiders. And I’ll say now that I’m not 100% sure it was a silverfish, but we have had them before (we’re right on the river) so I assumed it was one of the horrible things. And yeah, horseshoe crabs freak me out too. I remember once at the beach as a little Rhombus, I was sitting in the water pretty happily, looking for those tiny burrowing crabs. Anyway, the waves start getting higher, so I turn around to see if they’re gonna be higher than me. Inside the wave was a horseshoe crab, legs waving. Coming at me. At my face. I ran ON the water, I moved so fast. Gaaah. And yet I have no issue with the Alien movies. Go figure. ---

I thought that the giant palmetto bugs and house millipedes down here sucked. Until I found about a 4" scorpion strolling through my living room the other night. Hooray for living in a tropical climate! We love it! :eek: ---

Our problem this year, and every year, right around this time - ants. We get big, giant ants. So do my in-laws, so I don’t feel it’s just me being a shitty housekeeper. (I do vacuum stuff up a lot more when it starts to warm up). I’ve actually gotten better about them - I kill them now. Before, I used to scream for my husband (yes, I was a wimp). Last night, I stepped on something wet in the kitchen, assumed it was water from putting the dishes away, and realized it was a giant ANT that I just apparently just popped like a zit. :smack: :eek: Disgusting. And the little fucker kept running. I got him, though. I will not kill spiders, though. I leave those for my husband, or I throw shoes at them. Most of the time, I at least smoosh 'em. ---

My cat spied the first millipede I’ve ever seen in the house last night. I shooed the cat off, wrangled the millipede onto something flat, and took it outside to do whatever it is they’re supposed to do. I did get a kick out of watching all of those tiny legs moving in such a hypnotic fashion. Rather relaxing, except that I was holding a millipede. ---

OK, I know house centipedes are teeth-clenchingly gross…but you guys do understand that they are insectivores, right? They eat the spiders, ants, silverfish, bedbugs, and cockroaches that otherwise plague you. You’d be trading a lot more than two for one to get rid of them. That being said…if I see them, and can get past the convulsive shuddering…I usually chase them to squash 'em…and they usually get away. ☹ ---

[/QUOTE] Millipedes, especially if you get the big, juicy native ones, can make pretty good pets. They’re harmless herbivores. ---

It’s funny, I get silverfish from time to time in my apartment. Always crawling up or down the same wall. I have a fairly decent phobia of insects, but for some reason silverfish don’t bug me that much. I think I admire how much better they are at evading me when I try to grab them with a wad of tissue than your standard stupid insect. ---

I can imagine that trying to burrow inside my leg. What about [camel crickets](http://pest.ca.uky.edu/EXT/master_gardener/entbasics/orthoptera/Camelcrk.jpg)? That’s not a very good picture – the ones I’ve seen have bodies about the size of half-dollars and look like spiders with too many legs. Brutally ugly. Allegedly harmless, but since they are big and crunchy and can jump waist-high and send me leaping onto my kitchen counter in terror, I’d like them to be eradicated from the globe post haste.
