B did a stupid, thoughtless thing, but I think it quite likely he was justifiably scared for his job when he made that stupid decision. He would have a right to a hearing (at which he would receive legal represention through his union) before he was teminated, but the FDNY could definitely seek his termination. ---

Is B stupid? Yes. Is B stupid for thinking that his girlfriend might actually try to save his job, if only to avoid him crashing on her couch for six months while he morosely peruses the want ads? Results unclear, ask again later. ---

No one ever has an obligation to commit immorality to save someone else. I don’t care how much you “love” him. Anyways, ff she had lied and said she sent it, it would still be apparent it was a lie. So no only would the guy be out of a job, but she’d be thought less of by her friend. Oh, and she doesn’t have to worry about him using her couch. She broke up with him, remember? ---

OP is completely in the right to be pissed off. If I got caught doing something like that I can’t even imagine coming up with “Uh, oh, my girlfriend must have sent that!” Also: Everyone who’s knocking the guy for daring to send a text to a friend about what a bitch his superior is gets an eyeroll from me. You guys are constantly bitching about your superiors on this website. He made a mistake by sending it to the wrong person. The REAL fuck up is lying about it afterwards and it’s a major fuck up, I think. I’d certainly break up with a girl who tried to do that to me. ---

I’ll insert something totally different: I think it should be fine to not like your boss and get caught saying so. Miss So-and-So should just vent the hate back at B and left it at that. People are expecting too much. They remind of George Costanza saying that everyone must like him. Some people just don’t get along, so what? On the simple account that B, as a firefighter, puts his life on the line to save people, I’d give him a pass. He panicked and thought he was going to lose his job, so blamed a 3rd party that he thought wouldn’t be hurt by the drama. Imagine if Mississippiene wasn’t a friend of S.
