But it probably is an informal insignia for a specific part of the crew of an aircraft carrier: the catapult team. Upthread, **turner** successfully identified it as the USS Yorktown (CV-10, now a [museum ship](https://www.patriotspoint.org/explore_museum/uss_yorktown/)). (Has to be CV-10, since USS Yorktown CV-5 isn’t someplace you could take a picture of it right now, [unless you’re Robert Ballard](http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=427545).) I say catapult crew because: [ol] [li]It’s a stylized cartoon cat[/li][li]The cat is shooting an aircraft off the deck with a slingshot[/li][li]It’s wearing a green jersey, which is the color of the cat crew deck uniform[/li][/ol] ---

Look at the carrier’s island, it’s definitely on the right side in the drawing. Is it possible the image got reversed somewhere along the way?
