# I have a Game Dev Tycoon (Game on Steam) question - are the game genres random or can i unlock specific ones? - edited title - RT

is the genre research random or do you have to do certain things to unlock specific ones?

like in the game I’m playing now I have kung fu unlocked but I’m not getting “fighting” so I can make my Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter game … I know its an old game but there’s no real info on how to get a specific game genre …

yeah, i thought maybe it was one of those things in similar games where say if you mix fighting and action and get a certain score you can unlock fighting … i guess not …

Long time since I played so can not remember the answer but I did read this game has one the the cleverest anti pirate devices.

Apparently if you had a pirate version all your most successful games got very little revenue with the explanation, “While everyone loves the game they are all playing pirated copies”!
