I have achieved the last remaining pillars of geekhood!

Last Thursday, I went to an ophthalmologist to see what was wrong with my eyes. You see (heh), for the past few weeks, nearly every day at least once I would get up from something, and after several seconds my eyes would cross. And I mean cross so much that I couldn’t really see. The doctor told me that I would need glasses, since I have hyperopia (which means that my eyes don’t focus automatically, and that can cause some muscle fatigue). Afterwards, I went to an optician, and he told me that he would have a pair ready on Monday or Tuesday. I went back today, and now I have glasses!

It’s a bit difficult to overcome the urge to take them off, since I have occasionally put on someone else’s glasses for fun, but I can get used to that. It’s also kind of odd looking around, since various objects cross the boundaries of my lenses when I do so, especially when I’m typing.

I also got a sports band for my calculator watch; my dad hasn’t put it on properly yet, but basically there’s an elastic band that goes through the spindles on each side, and then a velcro strap business for continuous instead of quantized tightness. Can anyone recommend a calculator watch that has a durable band (i.e. not resin, but a sports band is fine), preferably less than $40, for when this one has a broken fob?

Now all you need is the white tape in the center.

Can you get contacts at some point or does it have to be glasses?

What color pocket protector do you have?

Well, it’s a very mild prescription, so there’s not much point, and I also have transition lenses, which would be hard to find in contacts. I also kind of like wearing glasses, at least for the moment, and contacts require more work, or at least so I assume.

I admit, I don’t have a pocket protector, but I never wear dress shirts, mainly because regular T-shirts are much more comfortable.

Yeah, you’ll definitely save on time and cleaning solutions using glasses.

I think a pocket protector in a T-shirt pocket might put you over the top.

But if don’t have glasses how can you do the ‘dramatic glasses removal’? It has been scientifically* proven that this move can make any light hearted situation 50% more dramatic or any dramatic situation downright suspenseful.

*Any resemblance to real science is purely coincidental

That one’s never going to happen. I got a Memory Titanium frame, so they can bend quite a bit without breaking. If, indeed, they can break… (Though I imagine that if distorted sufficiently, the metal could cause the lenses to break; naturally, I have no wish to test this hypothesis.)

Yup, they can break just fine. I had a frame like that - it lasted for about three years, and then snap!

Plus, everybody knows that all it takes for the nerdy scientist/journalist to become a hotter’n’Satan’s-pants chick/superhero is removal of the glasses. Sunglasses may be substituted, if the superhero got his power during Lasik.

I imagine that three years would actually be a rather respectable age for glasses, especially for teenagers.

Well, heck, I can take them off with no problem; the main thing that they do is help me a bit with stuff that’s far away. The main idea is that they relieve some muscle strain, and that combined with taking breaks during reading prevents my attacks (see OP).

Although according to my mom, they make me look smarter, so I don’t know that I’d really want to take them off.

Now you just need a propeller beenie & a few certifications…
