I was in a very similar situation as you 14 months ago. Already had a good job at a company I liked. Only dark cloud was that I knew that company was ripe to be acquired by one of the big players in the filed. Nonetheless, good pay, great challenges, and good people.

Along comes a call, and I wind up being heavily recruited by a company in a different but similar field. Same as you, I let them sell me on the role. There was a lot to like. New company has great upside, is growing, and has a true “best in the world” product.

When they asked me what it would take to lure me over, I went what I thought was high at 130% of my current salary. They didn’t bat an eye. Actually wound up at 132% just so it was a nice even number. Annual bonus was also 10% higher than old role.

Don’t be afraid to highball your demands. As long as they want you as bad as it sounds like they do, the worst that will happen is that they counter.

Congrats, **Leaffan** , that’s awesome for you!!

I’ve recently had two interviews where my attitude was “why should I leave my current job”. Both companies offered me a job with significant salary increases. I turned down one because the job itself wasn’t enough to make me want to take it (although to be fair, this did include a relocation to a town I wasn’t keen on). The job I accepted will have a longer commute than I have now, but the actual work is going to be different enough and challenging enough to make it worth while (along with the 30% salary increase)😃

Do you think it’s a great job, good company and do you like the CEO? Seems pretty cool if the CEO is a good read of character and doesn’t want to flaf around. Ask for some kind of guarantee if it doesn’t work out. Maybe a guaranteed first year bonus to limit your risk?

I may have to take a pay cut here, but no commute.

This will be an interesting negotiation process.

Not when you factor in the gas and extra room that **Leaffan** is currently paying. Even with a pay cut, he could come out ahead because of reduced commute times.

I negotiated for the same pay. A tiny bit less, but no union dues so it’s a wash.

I have the letter, but haven’t signed it yet. Pending security check, which may be an issue.

Separation has cost me regarding my credit rating. I’ve been a bad boy this year too.

Good luck, it’s ALWAYS better to interview while still employed!!!

Please remember that Government contracting companies tend to live and die by the period of performance of a contract. If your perspective employer is hiring because of a recent (or pending) contract win, staff can be dropped at contract’s end as quickly as they were hired. I hope this is not the case with your position but ramping up/laying off is par for the industry in many instances.

**Leaffan** is in Canada. Rules for whether you count as an employee, and severance for dismissal, are both generally more favourable to the employee than they are in the US.

Update:

So I’ve filled in the dozen or so forms they required for security and reference checks and it’s in their hands now. One of the checks required me to visit a Canada Post location and go through some proprietary identification check that the feds have in place with the posties: weird.

I have had a bad last few years with credit issues due to a messy separation and impending divorce, and (I’ll come clean) I had a DUI about 11 months ago.

This has been my own annus horribilis.

Thanks for the bump **Piper**. No. I haven’t heard back, and I’ve been totally silent myself, until this afternoon when I sent an email inquiring about the progress on my security clearance.

It’ts been a nerve-racking last couple of weeks. I’m sure I’ll hear something this week, one way or t’other.

My husband did just that several months ago. He took a small pay cut, but has a shorter commute and we now have very good health benefits which the company pays quite a chunk of. Congratulations to you, well done!
