I’m a 17 year old guy. My tastes are…dated, i guess you could say. Let me list some of my favorite bands, but first i’d like to add this disclaimer - In order to full appreciate this, you have to imagine a 17 year old male in sunglasses, driving around with the windows down and the volume cranked up\*, listening to: (the mix CD i have in the car now contains) A Flock Of Seagulls AC/DC The Bee Gees Frankie Valli Duran Duran Depeche Mode Huey Lewis And The News Motley Crue Van Halen Falco Although, this is the stuff my dad played in the car when i was five, so it goes to show… \*Not all the way up. I’m not _that_ much of an asshole. ---

I’m no lawyer, but I’m pretty sure making a kid listen to Yes counts as child abuse. ---

I say go totally old school and fill your boy’s iPod with: The Doors The Beatles The Rolling Stones Jimmy Hendrix Rush Yes AC/DC Boston Pink Floyd The Clash The Ramones Bruce Springsteen Black Sabbath The Greatfull Dead and of course Led Zeppelin That should be just the right mix of classic rock, metal, punk and prgressive psychadelica to make him realize how much today’s music sucks. ---

So, of course the older folk (myself included) are gleeful that kids are listening to older music. But kids should be listening to ANYTHING that makes their parents cringe. Why are they listening to Doors (etc.)? It seems like a bizarre sociological phenomenon. Using the proper cliche–“what’s up with that?” ---

Especially since the Doors suck. No, really. Divorce your taste from your memory for a second and look at the band rationally. No bass player, so that cripples the keyboard player. The drummer was…barely adequate. Over-wrought lyrics from an alcoholic “poet” with delusions of musicianhood. They stink. Pair them with memory, however, and they are the music of my youth. And I wouldn’t trade my memories, or CDs, for the world. I wonder what the kids today are remembering while listening to Morrison’s ramblings…? ---

My 10 year old son loves R.E.M., Queen, They Might Be Giants, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and a bunch of others. Yay! He also recently announced that his new favorite food, after chocolate, was tofu. This replaces broccoli as his top food. ---

A few of my favourite artists: FatBoy Slim The Eagles Apollo 440 The Bloodhound Gang Queen Boney M Supertramp Creedence Clearwater Revival Weird Al Yankovic Armand Van Helden Daft Punk The Prodigy Deep Swing ELO Glenn Miller In short, my car’s MP3 player is liable to be pumping anything from _Where’s Your Head At?_ to _Journey Of The Sorceror_, to _A Kind Of Magic_, to _Hooked On Classics_, to _Da Funk_, and beyond… I’m currently holding at 40 MegaFonzies- according to my Coolometer- when I’m cruising with Oingo Boingo’s classic _Weird Science_, too.
