Whilst trying to track down some suitable lyrics to fit into DSOTF’s birthday thread,I went to check out a Pink Floyd lyric place and have spent a very enjoyable couple of hours reading through the lyrics.Some are just mildly odd.Others are very uplifting,whilst some just make you feel inspired and amazed by the universe.There’s a lot of cosmic imagery(very much like the Moody Blues) and I love the lyrics-I’m very keen on groups who can make you go Wow when you realize that they manage to encapsulate something so wonderfully succinctly in a lyric or come up with completely inventive and new lyrics(the Beautiful South are brilliant at this,and Runrig too).
Much better than I love you,you love me or shoobedoobedoowop…
and some of the lesser-known stuff is fantastic.As I had only really heard of Arnold Layne,See Emily Play and Brick in the Wall(and the flying pigs!),I have discovered a whole new fantastic load of songs to get into.I’ve been converted.I am now a Floydie 😛

But even if that was your intention at the beginning,you may find something you never knew you liked if you hadn’t have done it.I personally would not have discovered the joys of Sweet Valley High had I not started reading them cos the girlie I had a crush on liked them 😃

Welcome! I looooove Pink Floyd, and my feelings intensify over time instead of fading away. Now my 6-year old is into them too and it almost brings tears (dab, dab) when he asks to listen to _The Wall_.
I think Pink Floyd is what they had in mind when they invented music. It’s perfection.

Hey Doc, it ended DURING the final cut. I remember hearing it for the first time and going, “Yeah, sounds kinda like PF, but Old Roger seems to have gone off the deep end.”
If you can find 'em, **Iceland** , lay your smelly hands on _A nice Pair_(two albums: _Piper at the Gates of Dawn & A Saucerful of Secrets_) and _Ummagumma_. Their old Syd Barret stuff was really wild. As I understand it, you pretty much need mushrooms and quadrophonic suround sound for the full effect. Piper was great for me and I didn’t even do drugs when I was listening to it (of course, you and I both know you don’t always need drugs for fantastic visuals 😉 )

I am such a huge Floyd fan. My father used to call me his Floyd Droid (I really shoulda made that my name here).
Best album ever, IMHO, was Animals. Must be listened to from beginning to end. But I love it all. I also love a lot of the solo work - Roger Waters’ “Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking” is one of my favorite albums ever. And Final Cut was… gah, I’m gushing.
I love it all. All of it. The stuff no one else likes - I adore it.
And one day I _will_ convince myself that I deserve the box set. Not that I don’t already own all the songs, but I really, really want the box set.
And, as a Pink Floyd devotee, I have to say that the tribute band “The Machine” is absolutely phenomenal. I caught them at the Foxwoods’ BB King Theater and was completely blown away. They did a jam of “Run Like Hell” that was truly mindblowing. Back then I was extremely shy, and seriously self-reserved, but that song completely erased my inhibitions and I just rocked on with the crowd.
I’m gushing again. I need some “Wish You Were Here” to mellow me out.

Yes, I’m sure that If I get my own car, I will drive to the middle of nowhere, play Dark Side of the Moon extremely loudly and have my head explode (with dark forebodings, too).

Have you gotten The Wall yet? Granted, it is pretty Waters-dominated, but you can’t miss with songs such as _Run Like Hell_ and _In The Flesh?_.

**Animals** is awesome. One of their best.
My favorite albums are actually **Meddle** and the soundtrack from the film **More.** But that’s after countless hours of listening to all of their albums.
But my favorite song is “The Gunner’s Dream” from **The Final Cut.**
If you are really into it, don’t miss the cuts from the film **Zabriskie Point.** I bought that soundtrack for the Pink Floyd and it turned out to be my first intro to the Grateful Dead…

Forgive me as I rock out to _Easy Money_, which is momentarily blinding me to Pink Floyd due to the perfect brilliance of the occasional King Crimson song.
I keep my music files tidy; I never keep entire albums, only my absolute favorite tracks. If you recognize my name from music threads, it should be no surprise that my largest collection of favorites is Frank Zappa, with 131 favorites.
Pink Floyd clocks in with a respectable 47 favorite songs, and consider that I’m missing several key albums. (Most notably Meddle, which is a total downer to not have.)
Back in the eighties I once tried some mushrooms, and went into near-seizure like incapacitation by the campfire. As I came out of it, my buddies had _One of These Days_ playing on the portable stereo. I groaned out, “GREEN!” They asked what the hell I was talking about. “It’s green! That’s the sound that green makes!”
Several months later, those same buddies and I were at a Pink Floyd concert. As _One of These Days_ got rolling into the “green” section, the psychodelic jumbotron images became monchromatic: all green. Nothing but green splashes in a kaleidescope type display. My buddy and I turned to each other, and in unison, screamed out “That’s the sound green makes!”
Pink Floyd really is too good. Some of the songs in my favorites that haven’t been mentioned:

Well it’s my favourite \*Floyd \* album (there’s a lot of competition for best album ever) Some of the best guitar parts DG ever did – and loads of clever lyrics.

I used to be like that too 🙂 Although I no longer think everything they ever did was great (and nothing after The Wall, counts as PF, sorry) I still go back and listen to some of the more _obscure_ stuff: Free Four, Childhood’s End, Fearless . . . and _old_ stuff Set the Controls &c . . . Even Interstella Overdrive gets an outing now and then. I’m really glad I found that music (it got me out of a serious Beatles rut at the time).
FWIW I’m a big Syd fan too. I wonder how much crossover there is because there’s not really anything in common musically between post-Floyd Syd and post-Syd Floyd?

I have to admit that for a long time I was pretty anti-Syd - exactly as you say, it’s completely different from post-Syd Floyd, but after approaching it again in the correct frame of mind - as its own thing, and not as a “Let’s see how this holds up to my expectation of Floyd”, and really enjoy it now for what it is.
Oh and while Animals is indeed a phenomenal album, I did mean that it’s the best Floyd album out there - not the best of all time (although it is definitely in the running!)
Mrs. Clegg, you must be proud of him… Mrs. Clegg, another drop of gin?
I also forgot to mention that Pink Floyd is always best enjoyed with headphones, IMHO. Especially with their older stuff. Saucerful of Secrets is simply phenomenal with a pair of good headphones.

Pigs is the best song from Animals if you want one that stands alone, but I really like to take Animals in its entirety. Lately I’ve been quite enamored of Sheep, since I ran across this lyric, which I had not previously understood:
The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He makes me down to lie.
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.

I’ve recently started playing my Floyd CDs again after years away. Of everything they did, “Shine On 1-5” just kills me the most: the chords, the guitar, the words, the vocals, all perfect. And Dark Side never loses its interest, sounding equally amazing no matter how many plays it gets.
Since we have the attention of some serious Floydophiles here, let me ask something: most of my Floyd collection are first-generation CDs. I noticed some years ago they had come out with remastered versions. Are these worth getting? Do they sound significantly better than the first Columbia CDs? (Not counting Dark Side here; I already have the MFSL gold version and the 20th anniversary edition.)
