I have less than an hour to learn about Twitter—can you help?

I’m just saying that the phone is direct and to the point. No back and forth, no special tags and @'s and procedures and whatnot. Call. Say your thing. Listen. Hang up. Each communication medium has its advantages and disadvantages. Not interested in debate.

Well, phones you have to know the number, dial the number, leave a message when no one picks in and hope they reach you when they call back.

The extra bits on Twitter are add-ons. It’s really not that complicated for most uses.
