My stepson had a run of bad luck a few months ago and had to move from NYC back home with us. This week, he got a job at a university in my husband’s hometown in the next state over. He starts Jan 5. So, stepson and hubby are spending the weekend there to find stepson a place to live. So, I have the WHOLE HOUSE TO MYSELF!! So far, I’ve wrapped Xmas gifts, had Doritos and chardonnay for dinner, let the dog up on the bed, and gone up to stepson’s room and looked in his closet to see what size clothes he wears so I can get him some new stuff for his new job. Tomorrow I’m going to take the dog to the park, buy new clothes for the kid, and make huevos rancheros for dinner (my husband hates eggs- weirdo). Later tonight, I’ll play my guitar. I love to play, but I hate playing in front of people. Any people. I suppose I’ll miss them pretty soon- but right now, I’m really enjoying a little solitude. ---

Plus you can walk around without pants on. At least, I do when no one else is home. ---

Isn’t that the best feeling in the world? I simply adore getting the chance to be alone in the house. I get all giddy, and race around like a crazy person trying to get things done. Now that we have pulled Grandma’s driving privileges, though, I may never get another hour alone…and that gets me all depressed! But just being able to walk from the bathroom to my bedroom without having to get completely dressed after my shower is such a joy! ---

I love having the house to myself, especially for a good stretch like a couple of days. Now is also the time to play the music you like that no one else does. Whether it’s ABBA or opera or Hoyt Axton, break out the tunes! What is it about women who view this as a chance to work on a housekeeping project? Last time I had some time to myself, instead of writing in silence and solitude, I cleaned out all the kitchen cupboards. Maybe because part of it involves making a big mess (I stood on a chair and wiped out coffee beans and rice right onto the counters and floor–we had a mouse visit and nibble at stuff–and chucked stuff like 2 year old cereal boxes onto the floor, too. Whee!)\* Oh, I also like to play guitar when I’m alone. No wonder I never became a musician–I hate audiences. Other fun things to do while alone: sort out your closet and try on all your clothes to see what fits and what can be given away and what new combinations you’d not thought of before. Have fun! ---

I can have the house to myself if I get up before anyone else. Right now, the hubby and the kidlets are sleeping, and I’m getting ready to go make coffee. I’m running the dishwasher, there’s a load of laundry in the washer, and I have a bit of sweeping to do. It’s nice to be by yourself once in awhile.
