OK, back from field testing. I ordered a 2x4 animal style, animal fries and a chocolate shake, nine bucks. It made all the difference. It earned it’s burger diaper. It wasn’t covered, so the cheese and grilled onions were trying to eat their way out of the bag by the time I got it home. No problems with the secret menu, other than the gal entering a 4x2, I had to clarify ‘Two patties, four cheese’ I had it right. It was a messy burger, but not unreasonably so. The animal fries were great. I finished the burger, but not the fries.
Hmmmmmm, OK, at least as good as Whataburger, but I’d go to Fatburger if we had one here. We don’t.

All in the name of fighting ignorance, right? I can send my expenses to Cecil?
I remember my first in and out burger, I was majorly underimpressed. After being told over and over that I would just LOVE in and out and it was the greatest thing since the orgasm I tried it out. Meh, might as well have Wendy’s.
I remember my first In 'n Out burger, and I was not overwhelmed. They grew on me and now I love them. My first one was when I was around 11 which was 39 years ago.
I’m from San Diego, so I know what you mean. But you got me thinking, though: are there communities in SoCal considered “The Bay Area”?
I’m an interloper here, but I grew up in L.A., and I’d say no, there is no “Bay Area” in SoCal.

Yeah, but The Apple Pan is unique. You can’t find another one anywhere, which really limits the discussion. 😃
But yeah, they serve a classic burger.

Y’know what bugs me? The South has its What-a-Burger and its Checkers and the West has its In-and-Out and Jack in the Box, but the East coast? We’ve got jack. C’mon, we have all the people. Where are our exclusive fast food places?
Bolding mine.

Well, as stated, I LOVE In-N-Out, but that’s wrong. The burgers all have “spread” on them - It’s the orange stuff on the fries [here](http://d0.biggestmenu.com/00/00/a7/7c8a4ae0da7d4bf3_m.jpg). Not that it’s bad, but it IS present, unless you ask for no spread.
Egads, you’re right. I thought just the animal style had the spread, but it looks like animal style has extra spread. I guess I just never really noticed it like I do on other burgers.

Not in the Boston area. I don’t think there many on the East coast at all. They have lots in the Midwest though. I love sliders but I don’t think hamburgers the size of a 50 cent piece are the same as what is being discussed.

So where can I find a WhatABurger? They left Denver. Haven’t seen one in years. That was one great burger.

In my travels across the western states I have encountered In-N-Out (hmm, I feel I am spelling it wrong) and aside from the dumb name it’s not a bad burger. But I would go out of my way for a WhataBurger. Miles out of my way, in fact.

So where are they?

Yeah, I’m surprised so many people here don’t like their fries, especially comparing them to Ore-ida. They’re among the freshest and most potato tasting French fries you can get at a fast food place. The only thing that would make them better for me is if they left the skins on the taters and fried it in beef tallow.

I’m pretty sure New Jersey still qualifies as East Coast. 😉

I can think of 4 or 5 White Castle locations just in the Central NJ area right off the top of my head.

I had a transcendent burger experience just last night at In-n-Out. Dayum, it was good, all the way around. That is one good burger, right there.

This thread has at least answered my eternal question: Who the hell eats at What-a-Burger? Now I know.

Your first mistake was waiting until you got back to the room to eat it. In-N-Out needs to be eaten immediately or there is a big drop in quality.

But, like someone else said, if you’re comparing In-N-Out unfavorably to What-a-Burger, there’s nothing I can do for you. What-A-Burger is a few steps below McDonald’s. It’s the Hardee’s of the west. Utter crap.

I’ve never seen one in Pennsylvania. Their store locator says we don’t have any, but then their store locator is terrible. It says there aren’t any in NJ, which would probably come as a surprise to **psycat90** , and it says that there aren’t any in Louisiana, but I know there were two of them in Lafayette when I lived there.

I lived around the State College area for a few years and travelled around PA a lot, and I nev er saw one there either.

I don’t know if you are looking on the same site I am, but according to [this page](http://www.whitecastle.com/_pages/Locate.asp) there are 26 glorious castles of grease in New Jersey.

Before someone feels the need to point it out: I know that Carl’s Jr. is literally the Hardee’s of the west. What-a-Burger is figuratively the Hardee’s of the west - crappiest, greasiest, dirtiest fast food joint that few people besides teenagers and human cattle eat at.
