> Do White Sox fans whine? I know that Cubs fans do, but I’ve never heard it with their cross-town rivals. It’s part of the reason I hate the Cubs - because all they do is whine that they’re cursed, when there are other teams with similar streaks of losing that don’t put up 1/10 the complaints.

Well, my sister’s fiancé whines about the White Sox all the time, and about how they haven’t won the Series since blahblahblah. Whatever. Don’t mention the “Black Sox,” though. Hoo boy!

> Nobody knew that Babe Ruth would become Babe Ruth. Heck, even SABR said that based on normal expectations, the trades weren’t one-sided at the time of the trade, they just turned out that way.

Oh, please. The Babe was a pitcher back then (although in 1919 he set the home run record with 29) and he ended with a career record of 94-46, a winning percentage that would have put him in the Hall even if he had never hit a homer in his entire career. The Sox sold an outstanding pitcher and a burgeoning slugger for chicken feed. The very next year after the sale the Babe hit 54 home runs, more than most teams in the majors, and the next year the Yankees won their first pennant. And you’re going to tell me that NOBODY noticed that the previously dominant Red Sox were now sucking hind tit, only three years after coming off their three-of-the-last-four-years run of pennants? Please. SABR is way off base on this one. Frazee made a bad deal, whatever his motivation.

No, Frazee made a deal that turned out badly. Nobody looking at the deal in hindsight thinks it was fair, but nobody at the time of the trade thought it was devastatingly one-sided. After all, the Sox came in sixth the last year they had Ruth.

A Boston _Globe_ columnist said that? Talk about the fox guarding the chickens…
Just imagine what would happen if a Los Angeles columnist started puffing the Cardinals. He’d get canned in nothing flat!

Hey **Loopydude** , stop reading my mind!

As a former fan/now-and-forever indifferent observer living in Red Sox country, I get annoyed by the “Yankees Suck” chant that breaks out at any sporting event, rock concert, subway station, company picnic or other gathering of more than ten people. First of all, fuck off, nobody (me) wants to hear it. Second of all, no, the Yankees clearly DON’T suck–that’s the Red Sox that have been making that huge sucking sound lo these many years while the Yankees have been racking up titles.

I’m going to see the Patriots in Foxboro tomorrow and I think I’ll place a bet with myself on the frequency of “Yankees Suck” chants I hear. Three? Four? If I bet big, I could make some good money from myself.

You’re all just jealous that we Red Sox fans have such a common bond, such a dedicated thread of sharing. Yankees fans will always quibble over who’s better A-Rod or Jeter, if Keven Brown should start, or if raping the Japan leagues for talent is the American way and all that shit.

We’ve got utter, ultimate, heart-wrenching, gutting, doomsday quality misery on our side.

In this year’s World Series, we could be up by ten runs in the ninth inning of the deciding game and every Sox fan in Sox nation will start to rejoice, and dance around, kiss their sweeties, and wake their children to share in the joy … but we all know, to a person, that we’re about to get bent over and fucked like crack ho’s.

And the next day, we’ll all get together and chant “Yankees Suck … Yankees Suck … Yankees Suck …” and collectively feel sorry for the soulless bastards in the Big Apple for not having what we have.

All hail the misery. And go Sox!!

It wasn’t. The problem was that Johnson tried to run the AL like a country club - he only wanted owners that would agree with him and do what he said - and Frazee, Ruppert and Comiskey weren’t part of his little circle of friends. Ban Johnson resented Frazee for coming in without his approval and did everything he could to try and make him sell.

> As for your assertion that the A’s and the Chisox were the Yankees’ enemies rather than the Bosox, I noted that Connie Mack’s teams were themselves mired in the second division since 1914–when they lost money despite winning the pennant and the Federal League raided Connie’s team. As for the White Sox, I sense that the “Black Sox Scandal” was orchestrated by Ruppert and Huston, among others, to remove the Yankees’ opposition.

Um, no. That wasn’t my assertion at all. My assertion was that that ChiSox and A’s were **Boston’s** main rivals. New York wasn’t a thought on anyone’s mind.

What difference does it make, since by 1921 the Chisox, the Bosox and the A’s were second-division teams anyway?

Beats me, you were the one quoting some guy who said that people were upset that the Sox were sending players to their arch-rivals in 1919 and 1920.

I merely pointed out that the Yankees and Red Sox were hardly rivals at the time, so it wouldn’t have been an issue.

_Non capisco!_
“Sacrificial team du jour”? You talk like the Yankees are the Wehrmacht and their opponent is Anne Frank–or maybe it’s the white government of South Africa against Steven Biko.
Sorry, but that’s the exact sentiment your phrasing conveys to me.
I dare you to spout such vindictive drivel in Anaheim Stadium, the Metrodome, Fenway Park, or anyplace else in the civilized world–that is, outside the five boroughs of New York City.

They never should have knocked down the Babe’s house. That was just begging for it.

FTR, the Babe is buried in the same cemetery as my grandparents. When I visit them, I often stop by to see him too.

I still don’t believe that Boston got those ‘Who’s your daddy’ T-Shirts recalled, when you can buy all sorts of anti-Yankee shirts in Boston. Eh. They do it to themselves. Plus, Schilling’s hurt badly. I hope they don’t try to play him in game 5, it could do a permanent injury.

Yeah, but the “Who’s Your Daddy” shirts were actually _officially licensed_ by MLB, whereas the anti-Yankee stuff is, well, _not_. You buy the “Jeter Sucks A Rod” shirts off of random guys off the street, not in any of the “official” gift shops. As far as I know, anyway.
