Bruce, we KNOW that YOU don’t care about what you do that hurts other people. But some of these things might just be against the law, y’know? Like messing with other people’s property? I suppose you don’t think that graffiti and vandalism is worth trying to prevent, or prosecute, either.

Actually, Nick, Melin’s idea isn’t so far off of what has happened to some hackers. Hackers have been sent to jail for pulling such stunts as the aptly named after a spineless being poster.
To said spineless wonder: said hackers have been sent to prison and others have been denied access to computers through high school. How do you expect to keep up with course work without a computer?
My neighbour has one very simple rule for his children, one which I wish your parents would follow: ONE INCIDENT OF INTENTIONAL MISBEHAVIOUR ON THE INTERNET AND ONE YEAR’S CYBER-GROUNDING! That means that he explained it to his children and if they pull the stunt you did even just once, then for an entire year, they’re off the 'puter.

As a coder from way back, save some anger for the people who brought you UBB. It’s outrageous that this system is so permissive. When looking at it, you would expect that whatever HTML you used would be encapsulated within your “cell.” This is not so. Many a thread has been mussed up by incomplete HTML coding. It’s a wonder this hasn’t happened sooner.
Yes, what he did was bad, but it shouldn’t have gotten out of infopop’s in-house testing.

Well, we’re not going to call the police (at this point, anyway), since no permanent harm has been done. But messing with the code is no laughing matter. Since gl0worm is unrepentant, we’re banning him and establishing a new rule about vandalism. We’re also starting to think maybe we should switch off HTML, before some genius figures out a way to shut down the whole board.

The kid committed a criminal offense.
It’s not insignificant. We may lose the ability to use HTML on this board as a result. It may well have resulted in a cost to the folks who run the board, if they had to ask for specific technical help in fixing it.
Legislatures do not (or should not, anyway) create crimes lightly. So when an action has been made criminal, we ought to look on it as serious. The burden is on you to show why it’s not serious.
Your attitude is what makes big crimes happen. Little crimes are ignored, and then the kid crashes a server one day and people have to spend $15K on a firewall upgrade.
No. I can tell you that if this kid had done something like this, some innocent little HTML coding, to one of the computers in _my_ office, I would call the FBI. Because DOD doesn’t fuck around on computer security.
Admittedly, we also don’t leave ourselves open to such easy hacks. But the principle is the same.
