I just bawled my eyes out over a CARTOON! (Iron Giant)

HEEEEEEYYYYYYYYY… arn’t you a guy???

J/K I don’t know much of it but reading this makes me want to see it!

Preview! Preview! Preview! I, of course, meant my SON. I am a cradle robber, though.

That’s the word on the street. If it makes you feel better, I love the Godfather movies and have yet to enjoy any film that co-stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

There have been a very small handful of films that I’ve rented, watched, then immediately purchased at the first opportunity. This was one of them.

OK.
I’m a guy and yes I cried.
** The four times I saw it in the theater.**
This is probably my favorite movie. Ever. No lie.
A movie hasn’t effected me this much since I was 7 and saw Star Wars for the first time.
Sounds so cliche and trite, but it really captured that whole “wonder of youth” thing for me.

And it’s a shame, those of you who didn’t see it on the big screen. You really missed out. This is definately one of those movies that was meant to be seen BIG.
If nothing else, try and find a letterboxed copy to watch (DVD). This movie was shot in (some format that escapes me…). Basically, it was shot in a longer, skinnier format than most movies. So when you see the pan and scan version formated for TV’s you’re seeing so very little of the actual movie. Even less than you usually see, due to the special format. So, if you’re the sort of person who can appreciate cinematography, it’ll certainly be worth your while.

Like everyone else said, the WB totally botched the marketing for this one. Which I also have mixed feelings over. Feels more special due to lack of hype VS the odds that less movies will be made like this due to it’s failure at the box office.

Incidentally, there were some really cool toys released briefly after the movie came out which you can find now at ridiculous mark up on ebay, including a 20" talking Iron Giant. Tre’ hip.

My personal best find though was a limited edition print designed to look like a russian propaganda poster, signed by the Director and one of the main character designers. You can find a picture of it here: http://home.fuse.net/irongiant/page52.htm

Do know that they’re releasing a special, 2nd edition of the DVD either this July or August (no specific date announced yet), featuring a commentary track from director Brad Bird and what sounds like some really interesting deleted scenes.

Anyways, I’m not the sorta guy who weeps at movies, but damn, this one chokes me up nearly every time.

“No following…”

::sniff::

Yes, I also am a lover of The Iron Giant. (I don’t get to watch it any more, unfortunately, because the ending makes my son sad.)

A question…I don’t REMEMBER any marketing campaign! Everyone here’s slamming it. What the heck did they do to try to sell the flick when it was released in the theaters?

All’s I remember are the posters, which, as seriousart mentions, were totally cool retro-Soviet in style.

I bawled my eyes out the day after seeing that movie when I woke up and Vin Deisel WASN’T saying naughty things in a growly robot voice in the bed beside me…

Thank god for Pitch Black

Ditto. I hate cartooms, but this is actually a well done movie. The Red Scare metaphors are great!

Oh yeah… Juliana and I love this movie. Iron Giant is a great movie, hands down. My favorite scene is when they go swimming, and the giant does the cannon ball. The look on the kids face is priceless. Not to mention the beatniks.

Heck, this whole movie is a great scene.

That would be the problem, yes.

“Excuse me?” “YEAH?” “You know you’re in the road?” “YEAH!” “Okay.”

Incredible movie. Very funny, great animation, and killer story.

I never saw IG…but I did cry buckets over Anastasia, another Don Bluth film for Fox Animation.
Anastasia was unfortunately eclipsed by Titanic, a movie I adore as well, but the music of the former was much better. Journey to the Past SHOULD have won best song, dammit!
