I don’t have kids of my own, but I’ve often seen parents hold the hands of their kids and it looked like their shoulders were being wrenched out of their sockets. I think leashes are more comfortable and safer for children.

If you have a toddler, your life is pretty tough. If having a leash makes it easier, go for it.

However, there is one reason I don’t like them. It would seem that if the little one has been using only the leash, they may have been untrained to hold hands. Please make sure that by the time they are not insane toddlers and have moved on to the trainable pre-school age that they are willing to hold hands. Makes the job of us Aunts and babysitters much easier.

(My two are still trained that when Mommy holds out her hand, you hold it. Period. If you object, grab her hand first and make your case. They are 8 and 9 and don’t often need their hands held anymore. :()

My five year old son just told me today, “mommy I am big enough to cross the street without holding your hand.” I said,“oh really, since when?” he replied, “since just now.”

Good on you. IMO toddlers should either be in a push chair or be tethered when outside the home.

I love my dog more than anything. I don’t trust her to not run away from me and into traffic or other dangerous situations. That’s why I keep her on a leash.

If I were to have a child I think I would love my child even more than anything. I would not trust my toddler to not run away from me and into traffic or other dangerous situations. I would not trust my child to continuously hold my hand in public - they let go when distracted or simply when they feel like it. I may need both hands to do something. I might get distracted myself with, you know, everything there is in life and take my eyes off my child for a few moments.

If I had a child I would have absolutely no problem using a secure toddler leash. My job as a parent would be to keep my child safe from harm and I would do that by keeping him or her tethered to me where I felt it was needed until they were old enough to know not to put themselves in danger.

I would also have no problem with telling anybody who questions or comments on why my child is on a “leash” what I have just written.
