I just cancelled Netflix after 9 years

Thanks…I’ll check it out!

I’ve discovered that the streaming movie selection on netflix is bad, but the TV show selection is quite decent.

Since I don’t have cable, there are plenty of series that are new to me. Plus the originals.

Yeah, I seldom watch movies on Netflix, but they give me lots of wonderful TV shows, especially BBC mysteries. Plus their originals, and the comedy stand up specials, the occasional documentary, and I still get DVDs for stuff that isn’t steamed.

Yeah, but at some point that was going to happen. Or perhaps the price increase just was a push for people who actually weren’t using the service all that often. But they weren’t going to keep the grandfathered lower monthly rate forever.

If anything I am more married toe Netflix than ever. It used to just be a portal to watch other people’s shows and content and movies but more and more I think of it as essentially a pay Channel like HBO because i enjoy their original content.

As it happens, that was the goal of Netflix management; that people treat it like HBO is, as a source of original content. And in fact HBO Now, the streaming-only HBO option, was introduced in response to Netflix. They compete with each other.

Incredibly smart move by Netflix. I look at HBO right now and see 2 more half-seasons of Game of Thrones, 1 more season of the Leftovers, and not much left of Veep and I’m thinking Netflix may end up being more of a go-to streaming option for most people than HBO NOW in the not too distant future (it it already equal IMO, but I like more quirky stuff along with my high profile dramas and Netflix speaks that language for me with Master of None, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Lady Dynamite).

Another reason Netflix is concentrating on original content is the difficulty of negotiating streaming rights. All of the companies are sensitive to the value of this content. (On the other hand, in 2008, Netflix acquired the right to stream 2,000 movies and TV shows from Starz for about $25 million for four years.) And now there are many sites competing for streaming rights.

But if Netflix originates the content, they don’t have to pay any additional streaming fees and no one can ever take away their right to offer the content for streaming.

Update: I decided to reinstate the DVD option because many of the things I wanted to watch weren’t on streaming or at the library. I did it within a time limit so that my queue was also reinstated intact, and I didn’t have to re-add everything.

If it wasn’t for OITNB, TWD, and Longmire, I’d be canceling too. There’s just far too many B movies on the streaming side & not enough new stuff.

Does the DVD Netflix still have the “my list” feature, or whatever it was called? It seems the streaming one doesn’t and that’s one reason I cancelled. I got tired of opening Netflix and starting from scratch to find a movie. Way back when Netflix first started, I loved it because I could maintain a list of movies I wanted to see, even in order of preference, and then just go to the next one on the list when I wanted a movie. It was a great way to keep up with movies because when I heard about some 1964 movie that sounded good I didn’t have to try to remember it’s name three weeks later when I was ready to watch. I could even add brand new movies to the list and wait until they were available on DVD.
If I could do that now with DVD Netflix, I’d consider joining again.

We’re going to cancel the DVD portion after 10 years, because we’re really slow at watching the movies we get from them. We’ve had some so long we could have bought the DVD for the money we spent.

Plus we have several quality used DVD shops near by, so we just buy stuff if it is under $6 and if we even might be interested.

Yes, you can do that.

What do you mean the streaming Netflix doesn’t have “My List”?!
