I used to work with a woman named Candida. Weirdest thing was that she worked for the company for several years before they found out that she’d faked her entire identity, was wanted in some other state, and had stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the company. So Candida was a fake name she made up for herself–odd choice. ---

It’s also the title of a [play](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candida_(play)) by George Bernard Shaw. Candida is one of the main characters. ---

Heh, that reminds me of a few years ago when some friends and I were drinking and gaming (board games, etc., not D&D type stuff.) We were playing Balderdash and one of the words that came up was Candida. Someone’s ‘definition’ for it was “The ugliest prostitute in a Mexican whore house.” The rest of the night was interrupted by calls of “Hey, Candida, get your culo over here.” and other similar things. ---

Once upon a time it was considered an elegant name. The meaning is ‘white,’ (like Blanche!) which is why the whitish _Candida_ is called that. ---

I like the name “Candide” all right, and it’s gone long enough I think you can use it as a female name just as much. I could never appreciate it as a pretty/elegant name. ---

My indie lizard-brain tells me the keyboard player from Pulp was called Candida (and still is, presumably). It’s a weird thing to shout at gigs, let me tell you.
