As a career insurance adjuster, I have to set the record straight.

Yes, talking with the other person’s insurance company is very common and not necessarily an evil thing. This is a persistant rumor perpetuated by those 1-800 lawyers that advertise on daytime TV.

I call the other people involved in accidents all the time to have them tell me their version of what happened…even when liability is clear. It’s important for me to understand what happened in the accident by getting the stories from the individuals involved. So many times people tell me to read the police report. Unfortunately, the police officer wasn’t involved in the accident and believe it or not, sometimes they get the story wrong when
they write up the report. <gasp>

It’s not the adjuster’s job to try to ask you trick questions to try to get out of paying for a claim. They are simply trying to get the facts to make an informed decision as to who may be at fault for the accident.
