# I just got Layed Off

In Cat’s Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut had a quote regarding unexpected change that he likened to “dancing lessons from God.”

I have been through what you are going through, and yes, it sure does suck.

However, I will make a bet that exactly one year from today, you will be in a better position, doing something you like better, with another group of good people.  
Sometimes change is good, even if it takes a swift, evil kick in the ass to make us change.

Of course, this advice doesn’t help you pay rent.  
Look into a temp agency (they are slow now, but pick up a lot after New Years). In the meantime, if you can afford it, kick back and watch the holiday specials with your family and enjoy the time off. Prep your resume during commercial breaks and make it a point to send out a minimum of 2 resumes per day.

December 5th is the last day for our company. Me and 299 other employees all get to spend xmas unemployed.

Great.

Unemplyoment in this state is exactly 50% of your income (before tax) so I will be bringing home next to nothing. No severance, no anything. The worse part about it is not being able to apply for unemployment checks until Jan 1st, 2002. Which means xmas will be paid for on credit cards which will just further my downward spiral into debt.
