Seriously. This bit of SDMB has made it into popular culture. The show was Kyle XY (first time I’ve ever seen it, so don’t be judgin’). A girl was walking through the door of a coffee house and assumed the guy in front of her was going to hold the door for her. He didn’t, it hit her, and she spilled coffee all over herself. She said “What, would it get you kicked out of the Asshat Society to hold the door?” What’s next, I burning your dog? ---

“Asshat” predates the SDMB. I believe a similar thread found it originated on _That '70s Show_ in the late '90s. ---

“asshat” has been around for decades. ETA: So close! But I think it even predates _That 70s Show_. And didn’t Red threaten to make Eric wear his ass for a hat, rather than call him an asshat? ---

Understandable mistake. We all assume, as impressionable kids, that our generation must have coined all those forbidden curse words that we end up learning. Kind of the same thing here. ---

I was fairly certain that it didn’t have its origin on this board, but it seems like this place is its biggest vector. Maybe I’m wrong about that.
