What a waste. If I wanted to buy _Maxim_, I would just go ahead and buy _Maxim_. Except for the tiny picture of Sylvester P. Smythe on the cover and the subscription cards, I didn’t see a whole lot of connection with the previous incarnation. I am plenty familiar with the notion of exploiting a name for the purpose of sales, but I wonder how much mileage the editors expect to get out of using the name of a magazine that most people probably remember as “That magazine that was kind of like _MAD_, but not as good.” ---

A few years ago I looked at a CRACKED and was amazed to see it had more MAD-like content than MAD did (I guess it was the final home of the late Don Martin). I wasn’t aware that it expired & then revived. ---

I picked this up last night. I was never a really big fan of Cracked, which always seemed to be playing “catch up” to MAD. Even when they tried to come up with a new premise of their own, it always seemed Mad-inspired. (Although occasionally they managed to get a movie satire out before Mad did, and with a better punnch line at the end). I haven’t read the whole thing, but my impression is that it’s _almost_ funny. They’re working really hard and trying to be edgy, but it comes off as closer to desperation and annoying. Maybe they’ll improve. ---
