We were told that the boards would be migrating to Discourse, and asked to send our current active email addresses (which for most of us they would already have had) if we wanted to be notified of the new boards opening. A number of the remaining people, me included, did so. Then the boards shut down. And we waited … and waited … and waited. The only thing the emails got used for was a request for money. For quite a while there was a notice up on the snopes main page saying that new boards would be opening soon on Discourse. But they didn’t. And eventually that notice disappeared. To the best of my knowledge there never was a replacement board; unless you count the Facebook page, which isn’t a board at all. Apparently there was a poll on Facebook (I only saw it second hand, I don’t do Facebook) asking how much people would pay for the boards as a subscription service, with I think at least some of the suggested amounts being in the multiple hundreds of dollars annually. I suspect that what they found out was that very few people both could afford and were willing to shell out that kind of money, and on discovering that the boards couldn’t be used as a major money maker they decided not to open them. As @Die_Capacitrix linked, there’s a thread about it here. (Am I still ticked off at this, when I bother to think about it? Gee, how could you tell? – yes, they were entitled to shut down the boards if they felt like it. But not to do so by telling us the boards were only being moved, so that we effectively had no notice to try to save what we could, if only of our own content. They banned the Wayback Machine from saving them, also. – None of that was Barbara; she was gone before it happened.) Anyway – glad to be here. Though when I first heard these boards were migrating to Discourse, I was a bit nervous! ---

Even though I’ve been gone for a long time, my Doper friends have been some of the best, most constant people in my life. I’ve lost touch with some, much to my sorrow. Some are still my absolute best friends. And some left us far too soon and I miss them daily. But there’s one thing they all hsve in common - they made me who I am and I’m so grateful for their presence in my life, whether for one year, five years or twenty. Thank you, Doper friends. I love you all. ---

Back to the OP, heck yes, I want to thank all my Doper friends. You all have helped me through some doggone tough times. This past winter, I was to put it frankly, suicidal. But here I still am. And much of that credit goes to all you friends that I have never met in person. Thank you, thank you. I have sold my north-facing condo. It was that or go through foreclosure. I’m going to be technically homeless for a month or two but that’s nothing. The home sale allowed me to catch up on all my bills. I do have a friend who will house me for the next couple of weeks, and another friend lined up after that. I even have a line on a job that I am applying to today. So, to better times, my friends, and thank you. Cheers! ---
