I know its not cancer but FUCK big pharma for not curing Restless Leg Syndrome...FUCK!

Thank you Ferret Herder. I can certainly understand defending your profession, and yes the broad strokes would be tiresome. Those of us that raise questions are generally not in the field, so aren’t subjected to the same shit over and over. Presenting information without attempting to paint someone as a paranoid idiot is how to effectively fight ignorance. Yo, u got skillz, G.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I didn’t mean to suggest you were getting all conspiracy theory, and I do understand this is a difficult area to comprehend. It’s just such a favorite with the “eat these natural herbs, not the poisons of big pharma”/“vaccines cause autism” crowds that it comes up a lot, and gets old.

And yeah, there are greedy bastards in pharma companies too. Didn’t mean to seem like I was underemphasizing the likelihood.

I use an all natural method for relief of my RLS. The drug companies don’t want you to know about it. You might be able to find out a bit more about this method on the internet. It’s called an orgasm. And it works every time.

That’s not part of accepted medical care, and I don’t know of anyone with those prescribing habits (which would be flagged by reviewers and land the person in trouble, with the hospital/medical board/DEA).

If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck…

Can you post a link to a photo so we can see if you also have an orange bill and feathers?

I finally found a sleeping pill that works for me but it gives me restless leg after an hour or so.

I have to fall asleep just as the pill is starting to work but before the RLS sets in. It’s like a sleeping game!

Ask your doctor about the medication Requip. I know 2 people with RLS and both reported to me that since being prescribed Requip, they no longer suffer from it.

Bad news is they’re down a hundred grand at blackjack.

You betcha - bunched panties and jackboots are the uniform of choice!

But the good news is that they don’t sleep any more because they’re so worried about money.

I second the iron-deficient anemia thing. I’ve also found that when my vitamin D is low, I have more trouble with RLS. When my D is where it should be (a constant struggle for me) and my iron is good, so are my legs.

Man, that’s just what Big Vibra and Big Lubra want you to believe man.
You sold out man, you used to be cool man.
Then the money got to you man.

Don’t believe the hype, stay anorgasmic just like nature intended man!

I wouldn’t say I have RLS exactly, but every now and then my legs (and yes, my arms too! Glad I’m not the only one) bother me like that. I’ve found that putting Ben-Gay or Flexall on the backs of my knees and elbows works.
(I usually only feel that way when something else is wrong, like when I’m sick, or I have a really bad headache, or after a seizure)

It actually is a hard difficult area to comprehend if you are not in that field. I guess that why I was surprised by some of the other knee jerk responses to my questions. I mean I get it gets old, but how is a layperson supposed to understand the ins and outs of the pharmaceutical companies? I’m surprised that some of the people here who have been “fighting ignorance” since 2000 aren’t better at it. I understand the “vaccines cause autism” frenzy. I lived through it, and was considered a bad parent for continuing to vaccinate my child who has autism, as well as my other children. I was openly called out by a large group of special needs parents for it. As if I gave a shit. If some of you think I’m a not job, you should have spent an hour with any one of them. When I say frenzy, I’m not even kidding right now.

For the record I take medications only when absolutely necessary and I don’t take any herbs either. I also avoid things that make me feel like shit: alcohol, tobacco, sugar, grains, and dairy.

Both of those instances are I named are just in the last year, and I did not even say I was in pain. They tried to prescribe me those “just in case”. If I thought about it I could list many examples. I had a c-section and took Motrin 800 and I was fine. I just find it hard to believe that people need narcotic pain relievers so frequently.

I only wear the bill and feathers at fetish conventions, that or the latex number, depending on my mood.

So you don’t need painkillers. Good for you; don’t take them. Why do you give a shit if others do?

Most of the innovative ( those involving what is known as new molecular entities or NME’s )research isn’t done by the pharmaceutical companies in house. It’s done by universities and research foundations and is supported by the National Institutes of Health and organizations under their umbrella such as the National Cancer Institute.

The agreements under which this research is shared with the pharmas are greatly weighted in favor of the pharmas thanks to the efforts of lobbyists that passed legislation such as the Bayh-Dole Act and the Stevenson_Wydler Act which allowed the fruits of publicly funded research to be exclusively licensed to the drug companies

Oh crap, I hit enter before I was done.

There is not anything wrong with the idea of research sharing, in fact research organizations are completely unequipped to market and mass produce their innovations. I think in a perfect world the function of the drug companies would be mass production and marketing primarily. Someone’s gotta do it.

But their is currently no transparency in the way this works and the drug companies take a lot of credit for and make billions from research funded by taxpayer dollars.

The knot in yours seems to be up to your armpits.

There was so much criminal fraud involved in the marketing of gabapentin ( neurotonin) that I’m actually surprised that it does anything for anyone.

Warner Lambert, a subsidiary of Parke Davis, had thrown a lot of money into this drug and couldn’t really get it approved for ANYTHING except as a second line anti-seizure drug. So they came up with a plan to save the bottom line by promoting it as same sort of snake oil that was an “off-label” cure all for everything.

They planted several dozen articles in respected medical journals touting its success with depression, ADHD, and lots of other conditions. The articles were written by a firm they hired and then they paid doctors to put their name on the articles. Doctors were paid to prescribe the drugs – they were recruited to participate in sham “medical studies” and paid a head fee for every patient that purchased the drug

Then they hired doctors as “medical liasions” to call on prescribing doctors to promote the drug s a cure for everything, using the fake articles as proof. Their scam was blown when one of their young doctors turned whistleblower and turned them in. They plead guilty to criminal fraud charges and paid 430 million in fines.

Still they probably turned a net profit on the scam and for some reason very few doctors and patients are even aware of this, the drug is still widely prescribed for many conditions even though it has never been able to successfully pass a clinical trial for any of these ailments

I don’t wear any.

I don’t give a shit what others do. If you want to take a pill for everything minor little discomfort, rock out with your cock out. I personally think it’s stupid.

Anne Hedonia, good post with excellent points. I thought that the pharmaceutical companies were behind most of the research.

Because there is a big difference between saying, “Hey, I’m a layperson and I don’t understand why cancer hasn’t been cured,” vs. “Hey, I’m a layperson and I don’t understand why cancer hasn’t been cured and it’s probably because you greedy people who have spent your lives trying to study this disease are secretly conspiring to make sure that it is never actually cured.”

I’m a scientist. Nearly everyone I know is a scientist. We are all working hard to cure these diseases. We spent our youth in the lab earning a pittance because of passion for science. This conspiracy that you are “just asking questions about” would have to involve me and everyone I know. Guess what? Turns out that it isn’t easy to cure diseases.

Exactly where did AH say that pharmaceutical companies are behind “most of the research”?

I’m unaware that drug companies and medical researchers sell tobacco products. Are you really equating them with tobacco company execs?

No one is claiming that drug companies are exempt from misconduct - for there are certainly enough examples of bad behavior on record. But blanket statements/suggestions that Big Pharma Is Suppressing Cures For Money, even when phrased as Gee I’m Just Asking Questions are, as noted before, both flamingly stupid, vicious, or both.
