_throwing his $.02 in_ Just took a look at Shayna’s pic… Oy tate, s’iz git!!! 😉 I met a wonderful Jewish woman at college who didn’t return my interest. (Such is life.) She was a complete package - great personality, wonderful looks, and that glorious mane of red hair. For a while I thought it was because she was Jewish and hence a little more exotic than the other women I’d been dating, but after some thought I could point out women who had the same kind of personality and intelligence she did and were Protestant or atheist or whatever. None of 'em had that red hair though… _sigh_ * * * All I wanna do is to thank you, even though I don’t know who you are… ---

I guess I can’t figure what people mean by “Jewish”. When I was growing up, I learned it was a religion, like Shintoism or Zoroastrianism or Christianity. Then, I met about a kazillion Jewish athiests and agnostics who assured me it was an ethnic group. At some other point I learned that an ethnic group was a group of people with a set of things in common. It can include language, physical features, geographical area, religion, and some other things I’m forgetting. This conformed to personal observation: African-Americans have dark skin and curly black hair; Latinos have have darker skin than Europeans but not so dark as Africans; Northern Europeans have pale skin, high cheekbones, and a variety of hair colors. No part of the definition of “ethnic group” necessitates _everyone_ in the group to look typical. That’s why typical looks are called typical, they are of the type but not necessarily of everyone in the type. So the next time someone with chocolate-brown skin, kinky hair, and a kora under one arm tells me he’s a full-blooded Swede directly descended from Gustavus Aldolphus, I’m going to be a teensy bit surprised. And in case you’re wondering, I wouldn’t comment on it; I almost never comment on anyone’s personal appearance because, as we have seen, a lot of those comments are going to come off sounding stupid and I never have any idea which one will. I might make an exception if someone asked how they looked, but I can’t find Michelle’s picture at [Fathom.org](http://Fathom.org) and I don’t know what you mean by a TM site. ---

Jewish people in the US come from all over the world and many look different. Originally Jews were Semites and look Middle Eastern. Many European Jews married “whites” in Europe and can even look Nordic with blonde hair and blue eyes. Nowadays, especially in the US, if you saw a person in a bathing suit, with hair tied up, etc., I don’t believe you can tell if a Jewish person is one or not. ---

BTW, I seen Jewish girls with red hair. Being a Jew is a religion or a race or a nationality, all or none of the above. It’s whatever a Jew wants it to be. Some Danes are dark, some Irish are dark. It’s believed that the Welsh sprung from some possibily Semitic group so if you go to Wales, don’t be surprised to see short and dark Welsh amongst short and fair Welsh. Both Celts and Moors lived in Spain so you can see the typical Spanish as well as fair Spanish. Some Celts lived in Turkey so don’t be surprised to see blue eyed Turks. Austria is the gateway between the East and West so despite Halder, even native Austrians can be dark. ---

That last post wasn’t supposed snippy. Really. I just get frustrated by the seemingly endless variety of things that will offend or annoy people. And the fact that I never know what they are, since there is no obvious pattern. Example: It is a major sin to ask someone how much money they earn, but when I got run over by a car a couple of years ago a lot of people wanted to know _exactly_ how much money I was getting in the settlement. My attempts to be vague and hem and haw were completely unsuccessful at stopping the interviews. No rhyme or reason. Sorry for getting off the topic. ---

1. Shayna is a maidel hottie. 2. Yes, that’s at least one of “the looks,” but lots of shiksas have it, too. 3. Rick–Stripes. But I don’t think that’s the kind of training most of us want. For the record, when I taught out East I had very long and curly black hair. Many many students thought that I was a Hassidic rabbi if they just went by “the look.” Oy, tell that one to Gramma Opal! I’m not gonna get bent all out of shape about this either, but as Boris noted, Judaism is not a “race,” it’s a religion. When people say you “look Jewish,” what they mean is you look Eastern European. Which I do—classic Fanny Brice; light skin, dark hair & eyes, big—I mean “aristocratic”!—nose. Since I was born into a Jewish famuily but I’m an atheist, do I have that classic “atheist look?” ---

When people say you “look Jewish,” what they mean is you look Eastern European. Which I do—classic Fanny Brice; light skin, dark hair & eyes, big—I mean “aristocratic”!—nose. Since I was born into a Jewish famuily but I’m an atheist, do I have that classic “atheist look?” ---

She is the only woman I ever actively pursued after being told that she wasn’t available (she had an “understanding”, though not a formal engagement, with another guy at the time). Our kids, however, will apparently grow up to confound every stereotype of “Jewish” physical types. My son’s hair is dark blonde and his eyes are grey, while my daughter has new-penny copper-colored hair and dark brown eyes (I have brown hair with some red – it was about my daughter’s color until I was six or seven – and dark brown eyes). We now know Shayna is gorgeous. Being half Japanese, Michelle probably does not have the typical Jewish “look”. But I think we settled the issue of her good looks last year when she was overwhelmingly voted a “hottie”.
