So joking about Metoo and PC makes you a nazi now? Cause you basically said that as shittons of people equate altright with Nazis.
Now here’s the part i agree with you. Joking about Transgender people is a minefield for sure. I mean if you want to go off on that person in the Gamestop, yeah. You want to make a meta joke about school survivors, yeah. Something like…“Jesus everything is off-limits! Are you telling me I can’t make fun of school shootings anymore?? What’s happened to us?”
I’ve read quite a few accounts, and as far as I can tell this is not true. CK’s agent at the time was a powerful player in the comedy scene, and when the manager of the two women that CK exposed himself to in his hotel room spoke to CK’s manager about the incident, CK’s manager said that he was “upset” that the women were speaking publicly about it. If you have read something more detailed, please do link it. I have not found it.
But to my knowledge, that’s what has since been characterized as a “threat.” I understand that sometimes threats amount to “Nice family you got there, wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to them.” But to characterize this as “threatening to shut down a woman’s comedy career” is inaccurate. I don’t care about CK specifically, but respect for facts is important.
Reading highlights is not really the most accurate way to experience a stand-up set. Call me crazy. Anyway the Asian man dick bit was the third part of a longer bit that I interpreted as being dismissive of dumb stereotypes. As far as I can tell, the bit about Asian men is meant to take a dumb stereotype to a really unreasonable extreme.
The Parkland and gender fluid bits pissed me off for sure. But overall I don’t think the set was really that different from anything he’s done before. The difference is that naturally anything he does for the rest of his life will be scrutinized against his offenses. That’s the way that shit goes.
Personally I’m irritated by the fact that bot times a new CK set has leaked, it’s been hyped by the media as an attempt at a comeback. If CK publicizes and releases a special, that’s an attempt at a comeback. Doing sets at comedy clubs is not that.
I’m more irritated by everyone who takes his subject matter as a sign that he’s “gone alt-right,” in an attempt to find a paying audience. I suppose anything is possible, but CK’s thing has never been to pander or to calculate. His work has an integrity which his private sex life apparently lacked. I don’t think the stuff he’s doing is so different from what he’s always done. It’s just that his fanbase, which generally leaned progressive, feels so betrayed that they don’t trust him anymore. Understandable, but I just don’t see it being correct.
Equally irritating are all the alt-right/alt-right light bros who are gleefully commenting on the YouTube upload of the set, applauding CK for sticking it to PC culture. CK and Bill Burr both have a lot of fans who are a lot dumber than they are.
My take is that he’s not trying for anything. I think he’s done and he knows it. Like “Michael Richards” done. He’s got enough money, and he’s a pariah. Leaked sets are all we’re going to hear from him. Not that it matters if I’m wrong.
When your sex life includes leveraging your power to pressure women to watch you jerk off, you don’t get to enjoy the label of “private”.
I don’t think he’s gone this direction to get paying gigs; I think he’s doing it because he’s a racist, misogynistic and transphobic asshole and free to act like his true self now that his career is shot.
…thanks for the correction. They weren’t highlights. They were lowlights. And I’m not going to read or listen to any more of the crap coming out of Louis CK’s mouth. I have zero desire to put this:
““You know why Asian guys have small dicks. ’Cause they’re women. They’re not dudes. They’re all women. All Asians are women. And they have big clits, really big clits, and when they have sex they just stick their clits in each other’s pussies and then they procreate using math,””
into the correct context. I’m not trying to experience a stand up set. If I want to experience a stand up set I’ll go listen to a comedian I actually like.
Call me crazy: but I hold the opinion that I don’t need to listen to the entire set to make a determination for myself that Louis CK is a disgusting racist misogynist who can’t keep his dick in his pants.
I’ve never liked anything he’s done before. I’m not at all surprised he came out with stuff like this.
Of course it was an attempt at a comeback. Doing sets at comedy clubs is how he built his career. Doing sets at comedy clubs is what comedians do.
Well I really doubt that an excellent comedian would suddenly reach for the bottom of the barrel like this. Hey Louis, a word of advice - if your jokes got old a decade ago on 4chan, then your career trajectory is probably going the way of Dennis Miller, and that’s a tragedy I wouldn’t wish on anyone, not even Dennis Miller. If I wanted an unfunny man to jerk off in front of me, I’d invite you to my hotel room and pretend not to be into it.
(That joke was funnier than anything in his leaked excerpts, for the record.)
Yeah, when you jerk off in public, it’s not really a private sex life now is it? He clearly did a calculation that he needed money now and couldn’t wait to truly repent and then try to earn the public’s trust. Instead he figures he’ll just be a low rent hack comic for the mouth breathers out there for the rest of his life. That’s a pretty far fall from where he was.
I will keep reaching for this article until it stops being relevant.
Brad claims his lack of mainstream success comes from a vast anti-conservative conspiracy, but it might be because he can’t relate to anyone with the tiniest bit of self-awareness. When you consider “people offended by holiday names” not only to be actual people, but also an issue that needs to be discussed, I don’t think your sense of outrage can be trusted around real problems. Compared to potentially Scroogey atheists, wouldn’t airport traffic or Comcast customer support calls seem like a horde of skeletons ripping apart your wife?
And like all conservative funnymen, Brad won’t shut up about political correctness. How is anyone expected to be funny when every word and viewpoint is offensive? It’s frustrating because anyone with a TV or an internet connection could tell you how if you’re funny, you get to say anything you want. If you personally think political correctness is stifling you, then good. Hang on to that feeling, you bitch-hearted coward. Society wrote those rules – which again, don’t actually exist – for people like you, who can’t be trusted. It’s like how women say they don’t like strange men complimenting them on their looks. Creeps complain that they’re not allowed to even approach women anymore. Meanwhile, the rest of us are walking right up to them, establishing relationships in respectful ways, complimenting the shit out of their looks, and crushing ass in the Walgreens Christmas aisle. Hi, ladies.
Political correctness doesn’t oppress truth-tellers, Brad Stine. It establishes a baseline of decency that only the laziest of assholes can’t figure out. And jokes need it to be there if you want them to be even the tiniest bit outrageous. If I tell a slut to get in the kitchen, and that’s the whole bit, she and everyone who hears it is right to hate me. But if I ask a lady to get in the holiday aisle for a 35-40 percent chance of climax, she and I are starting to really build something together. Hi again, ladies.
Interesting to see how various “celebrities” are reacting to Louis C.K.'s most recent outrage.
Ellen Barkin (I only remember her from an old movie she did with Dennis Quaid that was set in New Orleans called “The Big Easy” but hadn’t heard her name in 30 years) tweeted, “I hope Louis C.K. gets raped!” and Pete Davidson, who recently decried internet bulling (at least when directed at him) joked that he was hoping he could hex C.K. with a hoodoo tattoo and cause his death, while conversely Ricky Gervais seemingly defended poor ol’ picked on little Louis by saying “You can joke about whatever the fuck you like!”.
With all I know about Louis C.K., which is practically nothing, I don’t see how this latest leaked tape is really all that more vile and disgusting than many of his other well known and widely celebrated bits (one of which had him musing about how sexually satisfying and enthralling pedophillia and child sexual molestation must undoubtedly be) which until recently seemed to gain him admiration, praise and tens of millions of dollars in earnings from fans and colleagues alike, including at least one hip, edgy poster in this very thread.
That seems a bit more neutral. If anything, pointed at the “Wah, wah… mean ole liberals are ruining my fun because I can’t casually slur people” set more than the “Hey, maybe don’t be a transphobic asshole” set.
I don’t know (or care) who the other two people are. To be honest, I don’t really care what Gervais thinks either except that I saw the quote today in other places.
It’s a shame Louies behavior was what it was, his latest hour was pretty good. He is such a talented comedian and film maker.
I have no idea if he can do anything to break back into society. He feels bad because he got caught and it fucked up his career, not because it was wrong to force women to watch him jerk off.
I don’t know. He will probably end up like Mel Gibson at this point. I’m glad his victims came forward though.
In the end, I think he’ll be fine. I don’t think this will ruin his career a la Michael Richards. But even if it does, he’ll be fine. Still, I think he’ll come back okay.
Not when you’ve had acclaimed TV shows and stand-up specials and you’ve been a revered talent for ten years. A set at a tiny comedy club on Governor’s Island is not a comeback. I think he’s finished.
