This. I’m sorry for your loss. Don’t stop at the one post. Let us know how you’re getting along.

Condolences to you, too.

Am sorry for your loss.

I lost my mother last year. I still feel guilty that I didn’t spend enough time with her when she was alive. ☹

@Mollie_Magill, @Jegpeg: very sorry for both of your losses.

We all have to do this (unless it happens the other way around, which is worse.) But that doesn’t make it easy; it’s a hard thing to go through.

Grieve how you need to. There are many different ways to grieve.

Agreed! Don’t let anyone tell you how to grieve.
Remember all the wonderful moments.

I’m sorry for your loss, man. I’m glad you had gotten a chance to see her first.

I had gone to Raleigh last month to see some friends from college and to take in a baseball game.

I stayed with them. Mother and I stayed up quite late chatting, while my Father kept her glass full. I think I realized then that her time was short. She had always liked staying up late, drinking whiskey, and talking. He was making sure she was happy with the time she had left.

Judging from the smart-assed between the two of them last Sunday, he was doing a good job.

Not much to say that hasn’t been said, at least in the practical sense. Your father did well by your mother. Your mother had a good run and a gentle finish net of the DNR flail. We should all be so very lucky. And what a lovely family gathering there just a few months ago. She was obviously proud of her accomplishments there.

Nevertheless, losing your first parent is the hardest loss. No matter how much it’s anticipated, it still cuts you to your core. So here’s another imaginary friend offering his sympathy. There are lots of stages to grief, and nobody does them the same way or in the same order. May you be gentle upon yourself and those around you, and they be the same in turn.

Peace and love to you and all who she’s touched.

This is a lovely, lovely family picture! Please keep it nearby when the darkness and “what ifs” encroach upon you, and begin to suffocate.

Losing a parent is like losing a piece of you.

Be good to yourself, and know you did all the right things.

My heart is with you.

What a lovely ginger family! Even the dog matches. How wonderful your dad sounds. And DNR is the way to go. We’re still a bit angry that the surgeon did a “perfect” job on my mom after he rushed her into the OR, but she never woke again (lingered for months).

I’m leaving for the airport in a few minutes. They’re doing a viewing tomorrow, as their last memory of her is in the ER, “full of tubes.”

It’ll be a short visit. I need to be here next week, so the 17 year old can go to CIA camp, and the Y asks for someone to be local, in case there is an emergency. With my herniated disc, there is no way I can drive to Raleigh.

ETA: The funeral will likely be in August, when the oldest will be out of Army training camp.
