Peter Green’s Fleetwod Mac (Need Your Love So Bad, Albatross, Black Magic Woman) was a genious English 60s blues band. Fleetwood Mac with Buckingham and Nicks (Rhiannon, Tusk, Dreams, Go your own way, Little lies) was a genius pop band. Neither versions were a classic rock band.
I’d definitely call this (and “Oh Well” and “Rattlesnake Shake”) hard rock. Judas Priest covered it:
For those unfamiliar with the pre-Buckingham/Nicks era (and still interested in physical media), the 8CD set Fleetwood Mac 1969-1974 is well worth picking up.
I’m sure I’ve heard a few Fleetwood/Mac songs on classic rock radio stations, in particular Tusk. I’ve even heard Bread: Let Your Love Go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp9B1FodnkI
In fairness, that rocks a LOT harder than Make It With You.
In the same sense that Copacabana rocks a lot harder than I Write the Songs.
Point nicely made.
Going back to post #11…it’s a ship of Theseus thing.
In this thread’s terms, who is “Fleetwood Mac” when you say that name?
Most people would say:
- Mick Fleetwood
- Christie McVie
- John McVie
- Stevie Nicks
- Lindsey Buckingham
But, there were 13 other official members of the band over the years. The iconic list are the ones above, the ones we all know and (most of us) love. Did they do other things with other members? Sure. But few remember them as that.
It’s like when you hear hooves outside do you think zebra or horse? The horse here is those five members above.
If Fleetwood Mac doesn’t qualify as Classic Rock, it’s only because their fan base isn’t overwhelmingly male. Classic Rock is one of those weird genres that is defined by its consumers; not by any particular musical attributes.
I was a Buckingham/Nicks fan before they joined Fleetwood Mac, and loved that incarnation of the band. And I’d heard Oh, Well got a lot of airplay on our “Underground” radio station way back when. But I’d never heard much from the “Peter Green Mac” until I googled and found a video of them playing to dozens of ennui-filled (and oddly dressed-up) French teenagers.
Need some poppy blues to cheer you up?
Well, they had a lot of different stages… I loved the late 60s, Peter Green/Danny Kirwan stuff. Then Kirwan/Welch. Buckingham/Nicks.
I consider each band their own genre, especially back in the 60/70s when they each had their sound. No one else sounds like them.
TIL that non sequitur is South African for utter shite.
Been a FM fan since the Peter Green days. Even saw the fake FM play when they were fighting with their manager. Best concert was a night in Vegas when Lindsey’s family was in the crowd. He blew the doors off the place.
