Inspired by [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=281805) and the VH1 I love the 80’s series. I wish I could have been alive in the 80’s it seemed fun…well actually I was alive in the 80’s I just wish I could have appreciated it. Anyone else want to come get in the time machine with me and go back to the 1980’s. ---

Dear God, I just checked your profile and you’re 20 years younger than me. Now I’m depressed. You didn’t miss much, by the way. The music was awful, the fashions were worse, and those who weren’t wearing grey shoes and consumed by rapacious greed were wearing ox-blood Doc Martens and convinced that nuclear annihilation was imminent. Ah, nostalgia. ---

I agree, for me musically the 1980’s were the best decade ever, particularly for rock/heavy metal. There were some very dubious fashion statements (poodle perms etc) but on the whole an excellent decade ---

I was teenager of the 80’s. Yes there was some good music, but has any other era (ok maybe some 70’s moments) had more silly music? And the clothes? GOOD GRIEF! Shoulder pads? Leg warmers? Hammer-time pants? Earrings that could take someones eye out? The HAIR!!! The boys with make up? The colours? The WHAM t-shirts? BOY GEORGE! Yes there was SOME good music but it was a decade that could have made you wish you were blind. Wake me up before I go go. (or deaf) ---

Kate Bush, Talking Heads, The Police. Electric Boogie and Break Dance. Cold War angst. Gorbachev and Reagan. Ghostbusters, Rambo and Dynasty. I had a mohawk, danced pogo and threw rocks at the police. Yeah, I kinda liked that decade. Though the yuppies sucked. As for Eddie Murphie and Madonna’s pointy tits, well what you gonna do? ---

I’ll admit it. I love the 80s and my husband worries that I’ll be stuck there forever and never join him in this millienium. I still listen to (on a regular basis): The Cure, Depeche Mode, Elvis Costello, XTC, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, The Pixies, Hall and Oates ( Shut up. ), Crowded House, Split Enz, The Pretenders, The Clash, Duran Duran ( I said ‘shut up’! ), Tears for Fears, Siouxsie and the Banshees, English Beat, Joe Jackson, etc. All of my Live 365 presets are 80s alternative stations, but I’m practically wetting myself in anticipation of getting the new Duran Duran album (come on, payday!). :o Don’t get me wrong, I like modern music like Ben Folds, The Tragically Hip and Tori Amos. But I’m getting the best of both worlds with the new “Retro” movement in music lately with bands like Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Scissor Sisters, and The Killers. The fashions are another story. I had leg warmers, tight Jordache jeans, flourescent clothes, my 1984-Madonna phase, shoulder pads, rolled up jeans (remember getting them really tight against your ankle?) with gigantic slouch socks, off-the-shoulder shirts, acid wash and two tone jeans. I don’t miss any of that stuff at all. ---

As for the 80’s musically, I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a decade where so much diversity was popular at the same time. New wave, Ragae, Punk, Ska, Rock, Metal, Pop… Yeah the Fashions were bad, if you look at them in today’s standards. Wearing Leg warmers isn’t so bad if everyone else is. One thing that I miss about the 80’s is the style. It definately had a look all of it;s own. You can’t say that for the 90’s or 00’s. ---

We certainly had more impressive looking enemies then, ie: snappy uniforms, high tech equipment, and they marched regularly in Red Square. Today’s enemies are “cut and paste”, they look like a bunch of beggars. I lost sleep over the possibility of nuclear holocaust, the threat of terrorism just doesn’t impress me.
