Write down their license number, maybe yell something from my front yard.

I would not chase them down Rambo-style through the mean streets of Columbus, however. That’s definitely outside my pay scale.

And the dog was apparently unhurt? Well - I guess I would make sure my dogs didn’t run around in the street anymore.

I’d take it to the vet, and make a stop at the hardware store for an invisible fence on the way home.

Twenty to eighty guns, including machine guns, but not invisible fence. Interesting priorities.

Wrong order.

What would I do if someone hit my dog? I’d rush outside with a non-murderous look on my face checking to see if the dog was okay.

What would I do if someone saw me coming and sped away, having previously slowed down? I’d goddamn check myself, figure out what was going on with me that made someone so terrified of me that they’d decide to speed off after having already decided to slow down.

It sounds like the OP has had a lot of problems with neighbors and crime. I’m sure it made him quick to anger. Not that he responded APPROPRIATELY, but since so many Dopers on here talk about their pets like they are kids, I figured he’d get a little more sympathy for the doggie hit and run.

Which is, btw, a crime in some places.

According to the OP, it was the neighbor who threatened his life and then filed a false report.

Even in locations where it is a requirement to stop for a traffic accident you can get around that if you feel unsafe by stopping as soon as it is safe and contacting the police.

I have little sympathy for the OP and there are a chain of reasons why.

1. The driver tried to avoid the dog and after she hit him slowed and was about to stop.
2. When she drove away, presumably in fear since she didn’t drive straight home he got in his car and chased her.
3. When he determined where her house was he drove into her driveway and jumped out of his vehicle and started yelling at her.
4. Her husband was angry at this crazy man threatening his wife and went to the OP’s house to also be an idiot.

Really the damn driver is probably the most innocent person in the entire story.

Why are the dogs “idiots” for playing in the street? I’m pretty sure the dogs are expecting the OP to be the brains of their particular operation.

It’s an SUV, not an SVU. I really, really doubt the Atlanta police are going to call in forensics to see if a dog THAT’S FINE might have gotten bumped by an SUV when its owner illegally let it run out into the road.

Also, good form on the not reading the thread before responding.

Except for the part where the driver backed up her husband in their bogus police report?

Yeah. Crazy all around.

edit: Sounds like the driver would’ve been busted had he the proper tape.

I agree. That’s why I said nothing about calling out a forensics unit, I just said why not have the cops, who were going to talk to the SUV owners anyway, take a look and see if there were dog hairs on the bumper. Not exactly high tech, or great expense, or even much trouble.

Ooooh snap! At least I read, with reasonable comprehension, the post I responded to. Unlike some people I could mention.

Uh, he said he asked if they were the ones who ran over his dog. Husband/boyfriend/whatever of female dog-runner-over got in his face, and he drove away.

Husband/boyfriend/whatever lied to cops about what went down, and got busted in a wickedly delicious moment of short-fuse karma. Which he deserved anyway for defending someone who would run over a dog on a residential street and then speed away.

As far as the dog getting out: shit happens. Why does he have video surveillance and not an electric-barrier fence. Maybe, and this is just a wild-assed guess, he isn’t Dollar McMoneybags, and had to make some choices, and thought the regular fence would suffice to keep the dogs in, whereas the security system would enhance the security of his entire domicile.

He had the “Oh, Shit!” moment when he realized the critters had managed, against expectations, to get free, and was in the process of correcting that, when Little Miss Hit-and-Run came along.

Seriously, this sounds like a residential street in a neighborhood, what’s the speed limit going to be? 15, 20 mph? How fast was she going that she couldn’t hit the brakes? How fucked up was she that she hits an animal and speeds away? And then makes up a bogus story to the cops?

Assuming that the list of guns Muffin posted upthread was actually guns that our OP claimed to have (Muffin sure implied that the OP had claimed to have them), he’s got a quarter-million dollar gun collection right there. Easily. (Per a friend of mine who’s a gun collector with an FFL)

Please get the story right.

Per our OP, and I quote directly, his own words:

> [@](#):
>
> She slowed before she got to him, stopped after hitting him, then took off as I made it to the front yard screaming at her to stop.

She slowed (presumably to try to avoid hitting the dog–because what’s the alternative? She slowed to try to make little Fluffy’s agony last longer as she rolled over him?)
She _stopped_–his own words.
He came screaming after her and she took off.

She did the right thing until the psycho-sounding guy came screaming after her. I’d have bailed too.

The list I compiled was from [post 17 of Ducati’s “Ask the Guy With Machine Guns” thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=15145113&postcount=17).

I did make an error, though. I stated twenty through eighty guns, when in fact Ducati claimed twenty to one-hundred guns.
