> If parents can name their kids Paris, or Sydney after towns, I don’t see such a big leap to **[Paisley](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paisley)**… 😉 (The fabric pattern is named after the Scottish town where it originated.)

[Paris](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_%28mythology%29) was a name **long** before it was a town.

The town of Sydney was named after [a person](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Townshend,_1st_Viscount_Sydney), and the original form of the name, spelled with an I, is a [very old name](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_%28surname%29), too.

So, there’s a long history of both of those names as personal names before either was a place-name.

Yeah, like Rachellelogram said, this was probably commentary on the kid’s behaviour rather than an actual name. I’ve been known to say ‘Hey, Melodrama/High Drama/Greek Tragedy, knock it off,’ when my daughter starts heading for opera territory, and her name’s nothing at all like any of those. Now I’m wondering if there’s someone out there thinking ‘Who the hell names her kid Greektragedy?!’

A couple years ago, my coworker was relating to me a conversation about his daughter’s name:
Someone had heard it and said, “Yeah, great motorcycle, man.”
“No, idiot.” My coworker remarked to me and revealed, “The name comes from the sword.”
The daughter’s name: Kitana

She’s turning 15 soon. It was already too late to tell him the vowels are all A’s and, for that matter, the Suzuki motorcycle is in fact named after the sword: Katana

I know a Viral at work. It’s pronounced Vih Rahl, not Vie Ruhl. He’s Indian.

I think it’s probably pronounced “Fook Yu”.

I have never met nor heard of an Indian person with this name. I’ve heard this claim so many times. I’m simply not going to believe it in the absence of documented proof.

Be that as it may, people still name their children after the cities, not realizing the name belonged to a person first. So, my point is still somewhat valid. 🙂

It’s unusual, but not without precedent.

Ft. Bragg in North Carolina is named after Confederate General Braxton Bragg, and there are plenty of people before and after him named that.

The Ohio State quarterback this year is named Braxton Miller also.

I am VERY curious to hear anyone’s thoughts on 2 girls (sisters) I attended middle school with in the 80’s. They were a white family, but I have somehow got it into my head that they were immigrants, possibly from eastern Europe. I could be misremebering that, tho.

So, their names were: Dewygoo and Deedum - pronounced as they are written. These were their real first names, they are in the yearbook and the teachers all called them these names, too.

Were the parents just weirdos or is there some culture these names could legit be from? I have never heard similiar names since knowing these 2 girls in school…not even close.

When The Proud Daddy gets real irritated at my nephew, he calls the kid “the fifth horseman of the Apocalypsis”. I happen to be one of the kid’s Grown Ups Who Answer Difficult Questions, so he asked me what does that mean. I explained, and he thought that the Four Horsemen were “the COOLEST” and sound like something out of his beloved action cartoons (I know it’s not Gormiti any more, those were last year, but that same style).

Not the first person to think so (cf. tons of X-Men comics, half of Pterry’s books), but you should’a seen him bouncing up and down exclaiming “that’s SO cool!” Appetite for destruction indeed.

And it would be the oldest cartoon character because the Kid knows that St John was writing before there were TVs, that’s why we don’t have live footage of Jesus entering Jerusalem and so forth (he did ask “why are there all these different movies with actors playing Jesus and Mary and so forth? Don’t they have the old _telediarios_?”)

Telediario: the evening news.
