As **carnivorousplant** alluded to, shoes are ritually unclean in the Arab world. Beating someone with a shoe is a show of supreme disrespect for that person.

i saw on the news last night, that an english DJ has just released a track samplnig many of Mohammed Al-Sahaf’s speaches
