I think this is the most recent toilet i bought

And i did intentionally get the water hogging 1.6 gallon model, and not one of the newer 1.28 or 1 gallon models. I live in a rainy part of the country, and I’m more comfortable with the older, more generous standard, that the companies have had a lot of time to optimize for. If i lived in California or Arizona, i would have tried something else.

Yep, I think the Drake is the one we bought.

Love the Drake!

I recently got new toilets as part of renovating two bathrooms. We went with the toto (with washlet!), and while they are great toilets, the upstairs often struggles to have a complete flush.

I spent a lot of time on the phone and emailing with toto customer support (for the record, they are great). I shot many videos where I put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet and then flushed. The toto support guy (a master plumber, with years of toilet experience. Well, you know what I mean) had me try the bucket test (flush by pouring a few gallons of water into the bowl all at once) as well as the toilet’s own flush, and making videos of the different results.

He was able to diagnose the problem, which he says often happens after renovations, especially of second-floor bathrooms. It seems that the toilet is, in this case and in similar cases, not the problem or cause of the problem. It’s the pitch of the waste pipe. After it leaves the toilet. The pipe has to have a downward pitch (obviously) for things to run down and out. It can’t be too steep, but it also can’t be too gradual. It has to be just right. And sometimes space is tight, and when running new waste pipes it might be just not quite possible to get just the right pitch.

So, rather than tearing up the floor again and re-doing the waste pipe, I decided that I’m just going to live with the fact that sometimes I flush twice. Or even three times. There are worse things!

As all of you know I am very much full of shit. And as a career traveler I have probably taken more dumps in more unfamiliar (and therefore questionable) toilets than most Dopers.

Years ago I adopted the policy of poop, flush, _then_ wipe. That greatly reduces the likelihood of a problem. Eaither material flushes OK. Together they spell trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with pee. Which you don’t want all over the floor along with sodden TP. 😁

I was given one in a white elephant gift exchange.

I installed a one-piece from Home Depot in a recent bathroom remodel (Glacier Bay McClure) and it works amazingly well, and “cleans itself”. The quite old Toto low-flush model upstairs doesn’t flush as well and leaves a lot of residue behind. 🤮

FWIW a powerful flush toilet can spray bowl contents well out of the bowl in a mist. Something to think about when purchasing:

Ours definitely do that. Two of our new toilets are wall mounted models with some sort of pressure flush. When I remember, I’ll close the lid before flushing, something I don’t typically do. I don’t care too much about germs, but these things are serious.

Although it’s your germs.
