OK - just to hijack this thread - I have the name of my biological father, and his workplace - how weird would it be for me to send a letter there, or call the place and say “surprise, I’m your son?” (of course I wouldn’'t say it like that, but there is no simple way to break such news) I have his facebook, and PM him a few times, but didn’t get a reply HOWEVER, given his age and how active the page is that doesn’t surprise me. So what would you do - send a letter to his workplace (a Dance School) and risk forcing him to answer difficult questions from curious colleagues, or turn up on the doorstep next time I go on holiday there? ---

I think the question is a pretty good reason why not responding to get someone to leave you alone is a bad idea. They don’t know if you aren’t responding or just didn’t get the message. I’d escalate slightly. The worst that can happen is that he doesn’t want to talk to you. If a single phone call or letter freaks him out, that says something about him, not you. ---

But you still only knew her for a week. Blood relatives or not, you’re still a stranger to her, and she still might not appreciate her information being put out on the internet. Yes, it’s public information, but some people still are very private. ---

So what happens if this person is a stalker, or an abusive former husband? I used to do karate with a woman who would move clear across country and change names every time her ex-husband found her again. One day she just up and disappeared and we kinda had to hope for the best that she was well and was just moving again because he’d found her - not because he’d found her and she was dead. ---
