I’m making a “dumped on valentine’s day” mix, because I’m just that cheery. There’s Ben Folds’ “Song for the Dumped,” and The Smiths’ “Unhappy Birthday.” Some more suggestions?

I’m looking for songs that are not so much kill-yourself-depressing but rather enthusiastically I-hate-you-la-dee-dah. So please, no “Love Hurts.”

Can’t wait to see what comes up…

I have always had a soft spot in my heart (or my head) for Roy Clark’s “Thank God and Greyhound She’s Gone.”

Hot Hot Heat’s new single, “Goodnight, Goodnight” could do the trick, especially with the snappy refrain:

“So goodnight, goodnight / you’re embarassing me / you’re embarassing you!”

Too lazy to look it up, but we just had a heartbreak song thread within the last week or so.

One that was posted which is fabulous is Harry Nilsson’s _You’re Breakin’ My Heart_

You’re breakin’ my heart
you’re tearin’ it apart
so f\*\*k you…\*

I think Bob Mould’s “Sacrifice/Let there Be Peace” fits:

> [@](#):
>
> And if you’re planning a future
> Of indefinite grace
> You’d better start removing
> The lines of deceit from your face

(Probably half of of the Bob Mould/Sugar/Husker Du catalog fits this criteria.)

Well, “Take Your Love and Shove it Up Your A\*\*” by Joe Pesci (or a darn good impersonator) is good for a coarse laugh. 'Tis an excellent tonic for the recently dumped.

B.J Thomas:

Say, won’t you play another somebody done somebody wrong song?
And make me feel at home while I miss my baby.
So play, play for me a sad melody, so sad that it makes everybody cry.
A real hurtin’ song about love that’s gone wrong.
So I don’t have to cry all alone.

Since somebody got to Nilsson before me, I’ll offer up Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Hard Luck Stories,” with the (IMO) classic put-downs of:

> [@](#):
>
> You still come around 'cause I used to listen
> I run a steamship, I don’t run a mission

and

> [@](#):
>
> Everyone don’t like something and we all don’t like you

Tom Waits _Blue Valentine_

> [@](#):
>
> And the ghost of your memory
> Is the thistle in the kiss
> And the burgler that can break a roses neck
> It’s the tatooed broken promise
> That I hide beneath my sleeve
> And I see you every time I turn my back

and

> [@](#):
>
> She sends me my blue valentines
> To remind me of my cardinal sin
> I can never wash the guilt
> Or get these bloodstains off my hands
> And it takes a lot of whiskey
> To take this nightmares go away
> And I cut my bleedin heart out every nite
> And I die a little more on each St. Valentines day

wow.

Well, I’d say check out some of the classic country songs - for every ‘sob your eyes out drunk at the bar’ tune there’s also a ‘you left and you suck and this is why’ song, usually either clever or cynical as all hell.

Here’s a list of titles (from [dribbleglass.com](http://dribbleglass.com)) - google for the artists.

All I Want From You Is Away

I’m So Miserable Without You, It’s Almost Like Having You Here

Are You Drinkin’ With Me, Jesus?

Billy Broke My Heart at Walgreens and I Cried All the Way to Sears

How Can I Miss You if You Won’t Go Away?

I’m Under the Table Over You

Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Posts of Life

Welcome to Dumpsville, Population Me

If Love Were Oil, I’d Be a Quart Low

I Bought the Shoes That Just Walked Out on Me

She’s Acting Single, I’m Drinking Doubles

Is It Cold In Here, or Is It Just You?

We Used to Kiss on the Lips, But It’s All Over Now

My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, and I Don’t Love Jesus

Thank God and Greyhound She’s Gone

I Changed Her Oil, She Changed My Life

How Come Your Dog Don’t Bite Nobody But Me?

You Ain’t Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin’

I Don’t Know Whether to Kill Myself or Go Bowling

You’re the Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly

If You’re Gonna Do Me Wrong, Do It Right

I Fell for Her, She Fell for Him, and He Fell for Me

You Were Only a Splinter as I Slid Down the Banister of Life

She Got the Gold Mine and I Got the Shaft

My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend, and I Sure Do Miss Him

Velcro Arms, Teflon Heart

If You Want to Keep the Beer Real Cold, Put it Next to My Ex-Wife’s Heart

If Whiskey Were a Woman, I’d Be Married for Sure

If You Can’t Live Without Me, Why Aren’t You Dead?

I Still Miss You Baby, But My Aim is Getting Better

If You Don’t Leave Me, I’ll Find Someone Who Will

Voltaire’s “Ex-Lover’s Lovers”:

> [@](#):
>
> I saw you with him. You looked so happy.
> All of that can change, 'cause I am so lonely
> and I have lots of time to send you straight
> to the devil. I’m taking my time
> to plan your demise.
> What if I were to cut you up and mail each part
> to a different town? It would take the most
> brilliant private eye the rest of his life
> just to put you together.

OK, maybe a bit extreme…

“Are You Happy Now?” by Richard Shindell

You took the toaster when you went
You never paid your half the rent
You took the spices from the rack
But you don’t have to put 'em back
'Cause in your haste on Halloween
You left your camera on the bed
Where we played roles in black and white
You left a roll of black and white
I set the timer, thought of you
Put the lens up to my head
I took a photograph for you
What comes out gray is really red
So are you happy now?

yeah, i just got dumped last month. great time of the year for that, really.

check out **the wrens** ’ album, _The Meadowlands_. it’s basically a concept album of a breakup. _happy_ is a good dumped song.

also pretty much anything by **morrissey** , but you probably already knew that. maybe _speedway_, i’ve always liked that one.

yeah, i’ve been listening to entirely too much morrissey lately. not good when you’re already depressed.
