> @Spice_Weasel ’s self observation is pertinent I think: the causal arrow may be more often (not always) depression causing the sense of loneliness whether there are objectively lots of real world social connections or not?

I have a friend even more extreme than me who will disappear for months at a time when he’s depressed. It’s not the lack of friends so much as his unwillingness to see them. He has SAD so this happens at least once a year.

I think you are describing me. For the most part I am a confident introvert, at least in summer, but the shorter days are already appearing and I am concerned about what comes next as I am working my way out of my racing hobby and therefore am dropping several of those casual friendships. At least this year I have a south-facing apartment and can get some sun, unlike my north-facing condo. I have fingers and toes crossed that it helps.

Yup (just saying, for a friend, of course).

Same here. What would happen would be something like meeting up Saturday mornings to play basketball, talk, smoke a joint after, but one guy was insistent on watching NFL, and that eventually disappeared like other get-together things with friends. When my car broke down a month into COVID, I didn’t fix it because I don’t leave my house anyway. I don’t think I have enough money to be someone’s friend 🙂
