I owe a California Use Tax? WTF?!!!

Update:

I just got off the phone with tax people. Evidently almost 197,000 letters went out last year and almost 300,000 will be going out this year. I asked her why I might have received it and she said that they were flagging people who:

  1. provide a service
  2. make over $100,000
  3. file 1099s

She registered me online and said I will receive an account number via email, which I will then use to pay the tax online. She also said to make sure that my accountant did NOT pay it in my normal filing, as it had to go through the ID number I’m being issued. And I have to pay for 2008 and 2009, and of course, going forward.

In the end, it’s not that big a deal. I was really concerned that they’d have me go back 8 years, as they said they can do, via an audit () in the letter.

Thanks for all the info the helpful of you have provided.

The online system is easy to use and works well also, something that is not normal for CA online processes.

And as not your tax advisor, I would again like to invite you to tell all the people in this thread who called you an idiot to suck it, then refer them to the above quote.

I’m not calling him a retard for not knowing the proper route. I’m calling him a retard for having never even *heard *of the idea that he might need to pay sales tax on items he purchased from out-of-state vendors.

Also, he’s a piece of racist trash. So that colors my opinion somewhat.

Fair enough. That’s not a trait I was aware of. I’m just here for the tax talk.

This should be the thread in question, if you’re curious.

I find this sort of thing to be mildly irritating. I can’t think of anything that magellan01 and I agree on. I dislike him intensely on the board, and I suspect that if he is anything like his board persona in real life, I’d intensely dislike him there too.

But this subject isn’t remotely related to anything I disagree with him on, and I was somehow able to alleviate a bit of ignorance without calling him names. It’s a simple question about what was to him an unknown piece of the tax code, and it should be possible to answer that without being a putz about it.

As i suggested earlier in the thread, if he had started the OP in GQ or something, and had said, “Hey, i just got a letter from the California government about something called a ‘use tax.’ Can anyone tell me what this is?”, then i wouldn’t have had a problem with it. I would simply have offered up an answer.

But he marched into the Pit, calling California the “nuttiest fucking state” for a tax and a tax policy that is followed by the vast majority of American states, and threatened to leave the state because of a policy that has been in effect for decades.

Pretty fucking stupid.

The OP gets to choose where he or she places a thread in this forum. If you start one in the Pit and act like a tool, you can expect to get called on it.

 You made the same claim in the other thread, but when called on it, here’s what you finally admitted:

Pretty lame, huh?

And this ignores that I said that I think that Americans (generally white) who were raised here and recently converted to Islam were deserving of more wariness (however teensy the amount) then someone who was brought up in the religion.

But this is what you do. Something doesn’t agree with your world view and he must be the most vile/ignorant/stupid sort of person. You should go back to that thread, son, and read it afresh. Try to find those things that I actually said that are so racist (you know, the ones you couldn’t find before, as you admitted in the quote above?). Even leaving aside that “Muslim” isn’t a race. () Thing is, you’re a schmuck. And maybe that exercise will show you that you’re hyperventilating for reasons that exist in a weak, knee-jerk PC mind only.

I won’t respond to any further attacks referring to the other thread here, as it is inappropriate. So, go comment over there and I will be more than happy to stop by bitch slap you as much as I think you need it.

OMG!!! I called California nutty! And I didn’t know that states charged use taxes!! OMG!!! And I posted this in The Pit and expressed some RO as I 1) admitted complete ignorance on the subject and 2) sought to rectify that fact. :eek:MG-:eek:MG-:eek:MG!!! Heaven’s to Betsy, that makes me such a tool!!!

Look, genius, I don’t mind some ribbing if you feel you must, but to imply that you were just completely unable to offer up the info you did without the personal attack is more of a commentary on you than me. And I have to ask you again, do you really think that calling me ignorant on a subject that I admitted zero knowledge of and announced so in the OP is supposed to cut me to the quick?

Pretty fucking stupid.

But, yawn.

I’m glad that the OP posted this. As a 40 year resident of Alaska, I have been completely ignorant of anything even close to this, and I do plan on moving to the lower 48 as soon as the economy improves enough for me to transfer to one of the offices on the west coast.

I buy a lot of stuff online, when I move, I’ll pay close attention to what sorts of use tax laws each of my “maybe” states has

What percentage of people simply ignore them?

Probably about 98 percent. At a conservative estimate.

That’s the gist I was getting from the thread. I thought I’d read the whole thing, but how did the OP end up getting “caught” so that the state mailed him a notice?

Probably fewer now that mores states are adding a line to the income tax forms - I think people are more afraid of entering “0” on that line than they were of not filing a separate use tax form.

In Florida, I’d guess it’s closer to 100 per cent, but hardly anyone here has to fill out a state tax return anyway.

I’ll refer you to mhendo’s reply, since he said exactly what I would have.

Everyone else is perfectly free to go read the thread themselves and see what a craven little racist you are.

ETA: And you know what? There are plenty of racists who think that a white person who miscegenates with someone who isn’t white is worse than a non-white person.

Not sure, other than “a lot.”

It’s been on there for a while now, hasn’t it? At least on the Wisconsin form, I seem to remember seeing the line when I first filed for a tax return back in high school (senior year, I think, so about ten years ago).

You kept saying that in the other thread and you came up with squat. So, why don’t you go to that thread and create a post there that uses MY words to prove my racism? That way when people go over there you’ll have made it easy for them to come to the same “conclusion” you have.

But maybe the problem is that my racism exists in your head, and not in reality. I repeat:

Have fun.

Of course you don’t come out and *say *you hate niggers, or all Arabs should be lynched. You don’t like to *think *of yourself as a racist, after all. But your disgusting positions betray you. You think that we should treat all Muslims as some kind of second-class citizens (without ever actually getting specific, despite multiple requests); you think that Arizona has the right idea about how to deal with immigration (make all the Mexican-looking ones carry papers).

You’re a racist, and anyone with two neurons to rub together can see it.

However, you are still supposed to pay sales tax. It’s just the Internet companies are not required to collect it for them.

I have been to many city/county/state government meetings and such over the past several years.

NOTHING seems to piss them off and send them rabid dog barking bitching and whining than the Internet and they not getting their cut of the pie.

I mean, whenever it comes up it starts a non-stop bitch session. By GOD man…they are ENTITLED to that money and they are being CHEATED out of it!

The idea that government is entitled to the money is one of the only things stopping me from coming back liberal. The idea that government is ENTITLED to the money pisses me off to no end and the fact that I would absoultely LOVE having had the ‘cuts’ they’ve had over the past few years…because to them a ‘cut’ doesn’t mean what it means to normal folks. According to them, my salary over the past 2 years has been ‘cut’ several percent because last year my salary stayed the same and this year my salary only went up a couple percent when it should have gone up higher.

So… Where exactly do you think the money for everything the government does comes from, then?

If you don’t get a raise that keeps pace with inflation every year then yes, you *are *making less money in Year 2 than in Year 1.

The money they get comes from people who work.

Now, I’m not saying the government employee doesn’t do any work or that it is not important (Hell, I used to teach)…but they don’t do any work that generates money.

Now, to get this money to fund their work…they are saying that the work that they do is more important than the people who generated the money in the first place.

Many times, they are right. Some times they are not right.

However, just because a revenue stream exists doesn’t mean they are entitled to it. Government these days seems to be in the ‘business’ of increasing their budgets just because they can. Believe it or not, but it is perfectly ok for a revenue stream to stay with the people involved and not have a government body take some of it.
