> The best of the other fruits easily trump the best of the apples. All us apple critics are saying is that apples are quite overrated given their space in our lives compared with other fruits.

To the bolded - was that maybe a [Pink Lady](http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkfxvzaJWm1qjbvmfo1_400.jpg)?

I probably eat apples in the most wimpiest way here despite my love for them. I eat them cut up into pieces with no core and all nicely scraped. The only thing that is left is the white stuff and the peel.

Anyway, coincidentally I am making apple pie for the first time of my life tomorrow. And even more coincidentally, it is mothers day the day after!

No, I don’t believe I’ve ever eaten a Pink Lady that didn’t come from the supermarket. The apple I was forgetting is [the Lowry](http://www.vintagevirginiaapples.com/apples/lowry.htm)

Anyone who genuinely, honestly believes that apples are tasteless lumps of mush from the supermarket is invited to come visit me in semi-rural Central Pennsylvania. We grow apples that are so damn awesome that I don’t even bother to buy them at the supermarket anymore unless the weekly farmer’s markets are on their monthly winter schedule. There’s something incredible about eating fruit that was grown on a tree I’ve driven past before.

And my favorite variety, the Nittany, is the best thing to come out of Penn State since Route 322!
