They mean different things to people who know what the words mean and to people who don’t. It really is as simple as that.
I don’t think ethnostates should exist. And I think a lot of people want Israel to be an ethnostate. But an Israel where all ethnicities are treated equally? That’s fine.
It’s always funny when an individual person thinks they get to decide what words mean, when it’s always been, and will always be, the users of words en masse who decide what they mean.

And I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who supports Pakistan’s islamist institutions. You’d have a hard time finding any American with any defense of America’s relationship with Pakistan except on transactional grounds.
America’s relationship with Israel has largely been sold to the public on moral grounds with the argument that we need to support a Jewish state which sparks backlash both because we wouldn’t use that logic about other countries and because many people don’t think their government is moral ay all.
