My 6 year old daughter who is still reeling from the death of her little sister a few years ago wanted a pet of her own to help comfort her. We got her a kitten named Domino because he had tuxedo coloring. She loved Domino and snuggled him night and day. Domino loved it but he had other ideas. Every time we opened the front door, he would try to get out. He was a juvenile but had his noogies nooged with a hefty vet bill. Two weeks ago, he managed to get out out and we have not seen him since. Winter has already set in. She is deeply hurt and I can’t stand it. I grew up with lots of cats. They tend to be very dishonest and disloyal animals but some are passable. Cecil recently did an article answering whether dogs or cats are smarter. It is basically the same as asking whether you want your best friend or a sociopath at Thanksgiving Dinner. I grew up with many outside cats and a few inside ones. One of my favorite moments was when a stray kept tormenting our other cats and I finally got my 30.06 and put an end to it. Cat photos are the animal equivalent of posting pictures of retards, sociopaths, and serial killers. Not all cats are truly evil but many are and they are not nearly as good as the dumbest dog. ---

Sooo sorry to hear about your daughter, and her sister, of course. That’s very sad. As far as the cat, when I was younger we had one disappear for three weeks. We got her back, though. So, there might be some hope still. My condolences for the loss of your daughter. ---

I just got home and my cat is really annoying me. He jumped up on the low bookcase and started knocking shit over (as I type this, he just did that AGAIN) and when I sat down to watch TV, he started launching attacks on my hand. So I was all ready to get behind this OP. But it’s a little too creepy and sincere. Cats are pretty evil, though. Especially mine. I’m about ready to send him back to Bulgaria. ---

Does your best friend jump all over your other guests on a regular basis? Does he shout his damn fool head off every time someone gets within fifty yards of his house? When you’re eating, does he sit down right next to you and stare until you give him something? My friends, when I have guests over, greet them politely or take no interest at all. They pay no mind to people walking past the house, and rarely if ever start screaming for no particular reason. They eat their own food and ask politely for more if they want it. Sure, you can train dogs not to do all these things, but cats generally work that way straight out of the box, with little assembly required. I’ve lived with a good number of cats and dogs, and if I ever feel the need to have pets again, I know which way I’m going. Besides, cats aren’t half as aloof as their reputation suggests…they just leave you the hell alone occasionally, which in my opinion is a desirable quality in a pet. Clearly, YMMV. ---

We have 8 cats right now. 2 foxes that we feed, various coons, possums, birds, & other critters. One cat the wife got on purpose. The other 7 are dropped kittens, strays, rescues of injured ones, etc. We both have had dogs over the years. I have had a horse. No matter how irritating an animal may be, I never blame them for doing what they do. I do get mad sometimes but… My kids come first. Kitten goes walkabout and it was really helping my kid, I’d have another the same day. Lots of kittens need homes. My kids come first. We now live in the country, bad critters are around. We protect ours. Putting down a feral is not all bad. I pride myself on making difficult shots. I don’t pride myself on making one I shot linger and suffer. Better a 30-06 than a .22 gut shot. We have our $$$ and our time and effort where our mouths are. You rescue more animals than us, then your opinion might matter if it is more reasoned than killing a bad animal is creepy because he was not all sorry about it… YMMV ---

I dislike cats, although I’ve never killed one nor do I have any urge to do so. Cat lovers are a breed that I don’t understand because I see no redeeming value to cats. ---

I love cats, but they shed all over the house (I mostly wear black shirts), have vile piss, require the litter box to be frequently changed, tear up furniture, and lay around the house sleeping all day.
