Talk about lack of reading comprehension!

1.) Animals can’t be murdered.

2.) The animal in question was tormenting his animals.

3.) He put a quick (I assume) end to it. He didn’t torture anything.

4.) He didn’t get pleasure from killing any animal, but some satisfaction from killing a pest.

He did bring some of this on himself by the way he expressed it, but dayum, people!

Only a matter of time before someone calls CPS…

I guess we’ve been lucky. For several years we had a terrific outside cat who’d been abandoned by the previous homeowners (Mrs. J. is highly allergic to cats and would love to have one indoors but no way) and later a kitten who compelled us to adopt her until we could find her another home. I never much liked cats but these two made me understand why there are so many cat people.

Oh fuck off all you holier than thou, self righteous twats. I am a cat lover. I have had several over the course of my life and will always have one. I love cats.

But if there is a stray that is tormenting my animals, who I consider part of my family, I would run it away, and if that didn’t work I would kill it. I would use a gun as the most accurate and humane method.

Obviously **Shagnasty** is emotional and I think his choice of words (“one of my favorite moments”) was unfortunate.

But get over yourselves.

But I forget, this is the Dope, and the wrong choice of words and any derivation from the accepted behavior of the hivemind must be pilloried.

Bend over **Shag** , it’ll be over soon.

OK explain this. Shag defended his family cats from a potentially dangerous stray, so why would that make the cat run away from him?

Also, he is obviously very upset that his daughter is upset about the loss of her cat following the loss of her SIBLING! This is real human pain, and for you to try to hang it around his neck is unconscionable.

I had a cat who left home after living with us for seven years. A week later he turned up through the hole in the floor that he used to enter the house and had a bite to eat. He was gone again before the evening was out. A full year after that he showed up once more for dinner then left again. Some time later when I got a job working at a service station about 6 blocks from my house, I noticed he was living in the house across the road. Everyday I’d see him sitting on the windowsill watching the world go by. A year or so later I didn’t see him there either, I figure he left for better pastures or died.

Eh, I’m sorry for Shag’s daughter’s loss of her cat, and I share the opinion of “put food out and don’t give up hope for a week or two.”

I also don’t see anything wrong with putting down a feral animal, but yet there’s something off-putting about the level of joy Shagnasty seemed to be claiming to get out of it.

First of all, anyone who’s never lived in an area where you could discharge a .30-06 and not have a SWAT team deployed to your home in 5 minutes needs to get off **Shag** about blasting the pest. Dude grew up with cats and took out a critter that was fucking with them. Oh I suppose he could have paid $30 for a live trap and then drove into town and incurred the expense to have it gassed. But hey, a .30-06 round is maybe $1 and the animal didn’t have to stress about being in a cage for hours until it was “murdered” anyway. Damn fine piece of responsible action shooting the beast in my opinion.

That said, the rest of the OP is wrongheaded. Dogs are no less foul than cats and they’re obsequious and childish to boot. Cats make better companions BECAUSE they’re unpredictable. Whereas a dog sees it as his job to be your friend and literally kiss your ass, a cat shows you every day that they can take or leave you, but that they prefer to take you. It’s really no different from having a captive love slave vs. a lover who stays because they want to be with you. Both are gratifying, but one is more sincere. Unfortunately, as happened in the OP, cats have lives and sometimes stuff happens to them that precludes their return home. Foxes, cars … cruel & insecure fucks who can’t square with an animal that won’t genuflect and asskiss.

Shaggers, Cats are better than dogs, your daughter instinctively knows this. Get replacements ASAP.

We got a dog in February, and I was happy about that because I like all animals. However, I’d never raised a puppy. The housetraining…not that big a deal. But the constant wanting to play, to walk, to chew, to bark…I’m just sick of it. I’m covered in scratches and bruises. She doesn’t mean to hurt anyone, but if you bend over to pet her, she’ll jump up in joy and black your eye. She nearly broke my hand last week when she rushed out the door and my leash-hand smacked into the jamb. She’s far too heavy and wild to be walked by anyone but me or my husband, and if she gets much bigger it’ll just be him. She needs to go out first thing in the morning when it’s cold, plus three good long walks a day no matter how tired you are. She bothers us while we eat. If we put her in another room, she claws horribly at the door. If you put her on the porch, she leaps against the glass door with such force it nearly breaks. When we went on vacation, we left the cats with my mom, but there’s no way she could deal with the dog, so…expensive kennel. She destroys her toys in a matter of minutes, and she’ll do the same to a shoe or a kid’s toy or a blanket. Once she swiped half a pork tenderloin off the kitchen counter. But it’s sure to get better…she’s only going to be a puppy for another year or so.

> Sure, you can train dogs not to do all these things, but cats generally work that way straight out of the box, with little assembly required. I’ve lived with a good number of cats and dogs, and if I ever feel the need to have pets again, I know which way I’m going. Besides, cats aren’t half as aloof as their reputation suggests…they just leave you the hell alone occasionally, which in my opinion is a desirable quality in a pet. Clearly, YMMV.

So true.

What…??

Did you read the black parts on the white page?

Besides, ammo is cheaper than fuel or TNT.

SEVEN of our eight cats were either drops by people who who too cowardly or uncaring to do ANYthing else, or possibly the animals strayed for miles to end up here. Our entire county doesn’t have a shelter, beyond what individuals do.
We spend a tremendous amount of time, money, and effort taking care of these.
We have found homes for others, but sick ferals are a whole nuther story.
I take no joy in killing.
At this moment, there is a kitty on my lap that was badly burned, and I’ve spent 3 months and about 500 bucks on her hands on care.

There are people who want to die and come back as one of my cats.

We now live in the country, bad critters are around. We protect ours. Putting down a feral is not all bad. I pride myself on making difficult shots. I don’t pride myself on making one I shot linger and suffer. Better a 30-06 than a .22 gut shot. We have our $$$ and our time and effort where our mouths are. You **rescue more animals than us, then your opinion might matter if it is more reasoned than killing a bad animal is creepy because he was not all sorry about it..**
> YMMV

Ok, I may qualify here. I live on a farm, I currently have 3 barn cats, 1 rescued cat, and 2 more cats coming here this weekend. (my sister’s, she moved can’t keep them, she will take them back when she’s able.) I also have 2 rescued Australian Sheperds, 1 Meremma dog, and a bunch of goats, chickens and turkeys.

I have lost 4 cats in the last year to coyotes. I have shot and killed coyotes. I had skunks invading the barn this fall. I got a live trap, captured 2 skunks and killed them. I also had to put down an injured pig this summer.

BUT, it was definitely not one of my favorite moments. In fact my heart hurt when I did it. But I know it had to be done.

That’s the difference between a person that loves and respects animals, and, well, sorry but an idiot.

I am afraid of airing my opinion about cats on this forum, fearing that I will no longer be welcome. 😛

My greatest problem with cats is that their owners usually let them roam in the neighbourhood, resulting in widespread pee-stinkage on various neighbours outdoor furniture and other places. Keep them indoors or on a leash!

That’s more a problem with the owners though… My opinion on the cats themselves is mostly in line with the OP. Too evil, too dishonest. Kittens are cute the same way baby demons are cute.

Do you mind me asking how the fuck you can characterize an animal as “dishonest”? Because certainly my cats have never lied to me. They have also been more loyal and discerning than any dog I’ve ever had to deal with, including the one I owned. Cleaner, smarter, and more self-sufficient too. As for evil, well, the anthropomorphism is getting a little thick around here. I would also like someone to articulate how they are “evil.” So that I can disagree with it, of course. 😉
