Could you even remove them at this point? We’ve turned a lot of people over to collections (I don’t know that anyone has ever called us later about it, these are all rent-skippers who you never hear from again), and my understanding is at that point the standard contract with the collection agency basically makes it so only they can do anything like that.

I don’t know if student loans are different or if they have a different contract, but our loan collections office recalls them from the collection agencies every once in a while and it doesn’t seem to be a problem.

To late to edit: They can recall them from the collection agencies under certain rare circumstances. Also, what can happen is that the borrower will pay the loan collections office the payment plus collection costs and the loan collections office will pay the collection agency the costs.
